Minutes Approval - The July minutes were be amended, as follows:
Paragraph 2, line 7, replace (vote?) with (6-0).
Paragraph 5, line 2, add at end - The attbi address can still be used until 12104.
Paragraph 7, line 2, replace Ted feels that 1, 00 (recycle bind) will be.;, with Ted predicts
that 1,000 will be....
Paragraph 9, line 1, replace (Coventa) with (Covanta).
Paragraph 11, line 1, replace Motion to adjourn - about 9:00 with - at 9:00.
Minutes were then approved as corrected (6-0).
A date for the SWAC meeting was discussed, which would not interfere with the
Board of Selectman's Meeting. Bob suggested that a possible change of our meeting
night be placed on the agenda for the next meeting.
Ted reported that larger compost bins have been received at,byDPW, and are
being sold for $20 each. The cost to the town~is~ $38, each, the discount is for , ,
encouraging recycling and decreasing the town refuse tonnage.
Ted also reported that the Board of Selectman decided to open the Compost Site
every Saturday during the summer months, and to have a pick-up of Christmas trees in
January of 2004. Unfortunately, these items were addressed by the Selectmen, before
Ted arrived for the meeting.
Ted advised the Committee that Brook Chipman has resigned from SWAC.. It
was also noted that Judith Mitchel will be resigning, as she moves out of the area. Judith
was given a bouquet of flowers and thanked for her efforts on behalf of SWAG.
It is anticipated that Bob and Greg will be attending an electronics (CRT) recycle
center in Gardner on Aug 13th, and Bob, Greg, Dave and Susan will attend a meeting at
Covanta on Aug. 21St
In a discussion of towns combining to lower recycling costs, Ted volunteered to
check if Reading would save money by lessening the days of collection.
Dave noted the amount of mercury in most home thermostats exceeds the amount
in medical thermometers. It was believed that these thermostats would be,acceptedhfor
disposal at the town hall. ; .
Greg suggested that we work with the Recreation Committee to develop a contest
or other program to increase the awareness on recycling and re-use. He also noted the
use of plastic containers sold in Reading, which are not recyclable under our present
recycling contract.
