2. Ted's report:
a. 43,800 vehicles visited the compost site in '03. That is up from '02 by 11,000
visits. The last year that visits was that high was `99.
b. Covanta is paying the fee for mercury disposal ($544.75). This is from florescent
lamps and batteries.
c. Hazardous waste collection - Due to the fact that Stoneham has cut funding for
its hazardous waste collection, Reading will no longer du a joint collection with
Stoneham. Talks with Wakefield for a joint venture at the Vocational High
School are occurring. At present a Reading only collection is scheduled for May
at the D.P.W.
3. Old Business: Bob referred to an article in the local paper. He requested that the
term "Trash Fee" be eliminated in the future due to the sensitivity of the term.
Committee meeting was then adjourned, 7:50. Susan motioned, Mary Ellen second
vote 5-0.
a. Co-operation Subcommittee was convened. Greg wants to come up with a
mission and requests a brainstorming session to propose ideas of activities to
- raise awareness and take the Reading community beyond recycling. There was

Greg and Lois.
d. Committee focus - Recycling in schools was discussed. Ted feels that some
schools are good, they use receptacles and request pick up of receptacles. The
education of all the staff and the cooperation of the custodial staff is key. It was
suggested that contacts begin with the superintendent and the school
committee. ,
4. New Business: See agenda for the upcoming meetings. KTI is the company that
takes Readings' recyclable materials.
