Regular Meeting of the School Committee Open Session Date: June 2, 2008 Time: 7:30 p.m. Place: School Committee Conference Room School Committee Members Present Lisa Gibbs Elaine Webb Karen Janowski Chris Caruso Chuck Robinson David Michaud Jesse Downing, Student Representative Staff Members Present Patrick A. Schettini, Jr.-Superintendent of Schools Mary DeLai, Director of Human Resources and Finance Colleen Dolan, Director of Pupil Services Visitors: Melissa Russell, Reading Chronicle Reporter Steven Vittorioso, Reporter for the Reading Advocate Doug Lyons, Parker Middle School Assistant Principal Sean Musselman, Parker Middle School Teacher Norah Connolly, Parker Middle School Teacher 1. Call to Order Chairperson Gibbs called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. and read the mission of the Reading Public Schools. She then reviewed the agenda for the evening. There was no citizen's input this evening. II Recommended Procedure A. Public Input None B. Rem None C. Continued Business None D. New Business 1. Approval of Field Trips Parker - Costa Rica Mr. Musselman and Ms. Connolly presented the Committee with details regarding the purpose, objective, expectations for a year-long science club and a culminating field trip to Costa Rica in April of 2009. Mr. Michaud made a motion to approve the proposed Parker Middle School field trip to _Costa Rica in April 2009 as part of the year long Science Club activities as outlined in the Superintendent's memorandum dated May 28, 2008, seconded by Mr. Caruso. Motion approved 6-0. June 2, 2008 2. Reorganization: Election of Officers of the Reading School Committee Mrs. Gibbs turned the gavel over to Mr. Schettini who chaired this segment of the meeting. Mr. Michaud announced to the Committee that he will not be seeking a nomination for Chair for next year due to professional commitments. Mr. Michaud then nominated Mr. Robinson for the position of School Committee Chair for the upcoming year. Mrs. Gibbs and Mr. Caruso expressed their support for Mr. Robinson. The Committee voted 6-0 in favor of Mr. Robinson as Chair of the Reading School Committee for the next year. Mr. Schettini turned the gavel back over to Mr. Robinson to continue as Chair for the duration of the meeting. Mr. Robinson thanked Mrs. Gibbs for her service and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Committee. Mrs. Webb nominated Mr. Caruso as Vice Chair of the Committee for the upcoming year. Mrs. Gibbs expressed her support for Mr. Caruso's nomination. The Committee voted 6-0 in favor of Mr. Caruso as Vice Chair of the Reading School Committee for the next year. E. Routine Matters 1. Bills and Payroll Bills and Payroll were circulated. 2. Bids and Donations Accept Donation - Wood End Parents Mr. Schettini provided details to the School Committee regarding the donation to be used toward the purchase of a Smartboard to the Wood End School. Mr. Michaud moved to accept donation to the Wood End Elementary School, from Mr. & Mrs. Petschek, to support the purchase a Smartboard as outlined in the Superintendent's memorandum dated May 28, 2008 seconded by Mr. Caruso. Accept Donation - Young Women's Club Mr. Schettini provided details to the School Committee regarding the donation of funds to Parker Middle School for the purchase of a document camera. Mr. Michaud moved to accept donation to the Parker Middle School from the Yount Women's League of Reading to be used to purchase a document camera as outlined in the Superintendent's memorandum dated May 28, 2008 seconded by Mr. Caruso. June 2, 2008 Award of Teacher Substitute Services Contract Ms. DeLai outlined the details regarding the process and results of the substitute teacher invitation to bid and answered School Committee questions regarding the proposed contract. Mr. Michaud moved to authorize the Superintendent to enter into an agreement with Kelly Services for Substitute Teacher Services as outlined in the Superintendent's memorandum dated May 28, 2008 seconded by Mrs. Janowski.
