Those present were Ed Toland, P6hf c c Kelley, Margaret Soli, Phil Maher, Jim Kiegley and Robert Silva = Police Chief. to P 2:02 2. Chief Silva reported his experiences and observations coming from a special meeting in Texas where he gave a talk at a seminar on violence at youth sporting events. The conference recommended athletic directors be certified professional managers and background checks for volunteer coaches be done help to set boundaries and manage parent participation better. Certification is not now usually done in this part of the country. 3. Jim Kiegley and Margaret opened discussion concerning how bullying exist and is being addressed in the Reading schools. 4. The minutes of the previous meeting Sep. 12, 02 were corrected and approved. 5. The pamphlet for distribution was discussed and a new design is currently being worked on. 6. A discussion was initiated concerning having guests from various organized sports in the town come and present current standards and their views about handling possible violence within sporting programs. An agenda for an open discussion at one of our meetings may be planned inviting interested persons and parents of children in youth sports to attend. 7. Margaret brought up a discussion of possible implications of some teachers being discriminated against in the proposed question on the Nov. ballot. The discussion also considered the impact on students. 11/13/02 8. Paul Kelley suggested Possible membership in MAHRC, the Massachusetts Association of Human Rights and Human Relations - Committees be considered for the Reading HRAC. This will be researched further. 9. The next meeting was scheduled for Nov 12, 2002. The meeting was adjourned at 8:55 PM. Submitted by Phil Maher: acting secretary for the meeting. -
