Soli, Phil Maher, and Jim Keigley =1. Jan. 9, 03 minutes approved. A copy will be sent to Carol Roberts fco:
records.
2. Margaret Soli discussed the peace demonstration to be held in reading. Although
not an activity the committee can directly endorse free speech of this type is
encouraged.
3. Paul Kelley reviewed Habitat For Humanity meeting that took place in Reading.
He reported positive responses there in .detail. Having the committee's approval he
will now communicate with the selectmen encouraging them to support this project
as a general recommendation of HRAC.
4. METCO program was discussed and the challenge by one of the school
committee members that it could be considered a race based program. Although
selection is based partly on race it is considered a "desegregation" program. The
program is considered good and is encouraged by most. Jim Keigley noted the
program originally intended to be temporary has lasted far longer than originally
expected for some 40 years or so. Its original mission may be somewhat different
now.
5. Phil Maher asked if it wasn't a problem that parents of home schooling, private
or parochial schools may be discriminated against by not receiving any financial
help from the town to educate their children. Also discussion took place as to
whether it is OK to make amends to an oppressed group such as women or racial
minorities at the expense of white males.
6. The town election coming up was discussed and although of course no position
endorsements could be made the committee encouraged the process of being
informed and following interviews with the school committee and watching items
on RCTV.
7. Racial Profiling to be presented by Chief Silva, who was unable to attend,
rescheduled for next month.
