Attending: Virginia Adams Roberta Sullivan
Sharlene Santo Col. Wilbar Hoxie W
Clay Jones Mark Cardono
Kathy Greenfield Jerry Kaper
Louise Sandberg (arrived 8:30)
1. Meeting called to order at 7:35.
2. Reprint of At Wood End project: Clay to prepare a press release. Sharlene will
submitt a list of realtors to receive an announcement. Suggested a quote from Sue
Theophanis in letter. Book delivery expected the first week of July.
3. 25 Auburn St.: Roberta and Virginia to speak with the building inspector, Glen
Redmond regarding the Zoning Board of Appeals hearing on July 6 when applicant
seeks a special permit or variance. Commission wants to relate in a letter or at the
hearing that 25 Auburn St. is under jurisdiction of another board (RHC) and that the
fabric of the neighborhood will be impacted when an old house is lost and a new one
replaces it. This contributes to the "mansionization" of the town.
4. Adams reported that the owner of the depot called seeking recommendations
on repair after the south east corner of the building was damaged by a car. Roberta
and Virginia took photos. Clay answered questions from a contractor. Jerry will check
out the repairs.
5. Need to confirm day of reappointment interviews with selectmen.
6. Addison-Wesley: Clay to check about aerial photographer to include beside the
building, the setting, juxtaposition to the highway, and architectural photos of the
entrance interior. Louise will work on oral histories: Betty Cronin or Dick Curtis are
possible interviewee. Also need to arrange to obtain original architectural drawings.
7. Treasurer report: attached. $6.61 remaining. Some of the remaining funds
earmarked for F-E house will go for professional photos of the finished product.
8. Approvai of minutes from a number of weeks.
9. We received the money from Addison-wesley-Pearson. It has gone into the
Special revenue account as a donation. The commission now needs to hire a
photographer. Roberta has two names for oral histories. When these monies are
spent, the commission will know how much will be available for reference books for
the school libraries.
Enclosed is an abbreviated report prepared by Louise from the official report
generated from the results of the datalogger information supplied by Massachusetts
Board of Libraries. Louise also reported on two meetings she attended. One was a
state wide meeting at Brandeis University concerned with the direction of preservation
planning for the state. The second was an Essex County meeting held at Salem State
College which highlighted the efforts of New York state to fund preservation projects
throughout New York state. The emphasis was upon how Massachusetts could be
motivated to start a similar project.
165 South St. have visited it and mapped it out. The early part was built around
ca-1765. Kathy gave us her impressions of our commission meeting. Adjourned:

Environmental Monitoring Program Report
Dataloggers were installed in the RHC repository, in Town Hall, and outside from
August 1999 to January of 2000. The program is run by the Massachusetts Board of
Library Commissioners in the person of Gregor Trinkaus-Randall the Preservation
Specialist. The report includes information about temperature, relative humidity, light,
and ultraviolet radiation.
Temperature ranged from 57 to 79 degrees F. Optimum temperature range is 55 to 65
for "special/preservation collections." The average reading was 66.2. MBLC
recommends that the HVAC system should be recalibrated to keep the
average temperature at least 1 degree lower than it is and to try to keep
it at a constant level on a daily basis. Since volunteers work in this area, a
temperature level as close to 65 degrees should be the target.
Relative Humidity ranged from 19.9% to 72% with an average of 46.3%. The
difference, 52.1 being 5 times the recommended daily variation. RH range should
fall somewhere between 25 and 40%. The RH will require an effort to control
especially in the summer and the fall.
The reading for light in the archives was 458 lux. Recommended light is 200-400 lux.
UV was 69 mW/lumen and 40.6 mW/M2. These figures should be 75 and 20
respectively. The first is acceptable though a bit high. The latter is double the
recommended level. UV-filtering sleeves should be considered for
flourescent tubes. Using task lighting for the work area is a possible
solution to the light.
The commission is encouraged to look at the entire report which includes charts and
graphs. MBLC would like a response from us by September 1.
