3. Bob Brown again visited us to tell us that there are 5 pipe organs in Reading, 4
in churches and 1 in the Masonic temple. He is doing research on pipe organs in
order to categorize them. He gave us the inventory that he has compiled. Bob
suggested that a concert at one of these institutions would be a good activity for first
night. The members of the commission suggested the Reading Cultural Council and
the Clergyman Council as good resources.
4. 25 Auburn St.: The house has come down. Virginia took pictures. The items
we wanted are in Dave. Barrett's barn. Clay volunteered to pick up and keep the
items. He will also write an article about the house for the papers.
5. No news is good news about the web site.
6. We sold 28 copies of At Wood End at the polls. There will be an article in the
papers. Members were scheduled to sell the books at St. Athanasius fair. The letter
has gone out to the realtors to encourage them to buy books for their clients. Clay,
Kathy, and Virginia volunteered to distribute the books to stores (Charles, Hitching
Post, and Sense of Wonder).
7. Treasurer's Report: Roberta purchased some supplies. The bills from Redstone
Camera has come in. Totals are General Fund: 1,199 and Special Revenue:
6,382.23. Clay purchased for the Archives: Preserving Historic New England.
8. Oral Histories: Sally Hoyt, Betty Cronin, and Dick Curtis were suggested as
contacts.
9. Town meeting discussed the Community Preservation Act. The state has
enacted it. It is up to each community to enact its own. Copies with questionnaire
were handed out to members.
10. Police Station: The old police station building is can the Massachusetts
inventory. Roberta will find out if a demolition permit has been pulled. If it has, a
hearing will be needed.
11. Members received their photos of commercial properties and began to label
them with addresses. The members suggested properties to include on the inventory.
Members were encouraged to research the properties they considered worthwhile
and report at next months meeting. Criteria: original form, history versus architecture,
stylistic- good representation, well-know architect. Photos were separated into
potential inventory properties and rejects.
