1. Called to order at 7:40 PM.
2. Minutes from April 17 approved as amended 3-0-0.
3. RHC public forum on restoring old houses: The event is scheduled in the large
conference room in the Reading Public Library. Notices need to go in both
newspapers. There will also be a mailing to addresses in the inventory. A notice ill
also be placed on Channel 0 (public access channel) and to the nearly historical
commissions, the board of selectmen, Anne Krieg, and the building inspector. Peter
O'Shea will talk. He writes a web magazine called Old House Chronicle. The
commission has agreed to pay him an unspecified sum. Wilbar made a motion that
this payment be taken from our treasury. Approved 5-0-0.
4. 232 West Street: No one can view the house until it is cleaned up. Members of
the commission have seen the house, but would like more time during the day. The
date of 1748 looks to be a realistic date. The realtor is directed toward getting the
- maximum amount for her client which may mean selling the house to a developer as a
tear down. A seminar for realtors to make them aware of the value of historic
properties as perhaps a mailing to historic property owners making them aware of
what they are privileged to won.
5. 1375 Main Street: No meeting with the developer was ever held. Commission
members have not heard from Mr. Scippa. Our priority is still to keep the original
house on site. The commission would like to induce Mr. Scippa to allow us to put
covenants on the property that would keep the exterior of the house white, prevent
dormers and keep window and door frames.
6. Preservation awards: Roberta made a motion to accept the certificate of merit
criteria without complying with the Secretary of the Interior's guidelines. Roberta
nominated Dave Barrett (32 John St.), Foster-Emerson House (Sidelinkers, Town
Meeting, Selectmen, Meadow brook Golf Course, and the Reading Friends of Historic
Preservation), and 89 Main St. (Leaning Elm Farm). Approved (5-0-0). The awards
will be presented May 22. Letters to the recipients will go out next week.
7. Addison-Weslwy: Motions was made to have the aerial photography done.
Mark know of a photographer. The commission will spend up to $1000.
8. Railroad Station: A group of 4 people are considering buying the train station.
They want to make it into a coffee shop/pub.
