10/30/01
Attending: Louise Sandberg Sharlene Santo
Clay Jones Virginia Adams
Wilbar Hoxie
Roberta Adams
Mark Cardono
Call to order: 7:35
Minutes: Meetings for October 19 and 2 were approved as amended.
Officers: The present slate of officers were reelected (Clay-Chairman, Louise-
Secretary, Roberta-Treasurer)
Sunday walk: Very successful! Coordinated with RAS and took place Sunday
afternoon, October 28. Members of the commission who participated: Sharlene,
Virginia, and Wilbar.
Sign on the common: The commission discussed the possibility of a sign to
advertise student achievement. The following comments are taken from the
Guidelines for evaluating changes to the Common:
Against: added focal point competing with Old South Church
clutter
What else?
Who is financing it and who will choose honorees?
Visual impact of too many signs on traffic
- Obstructs views of the Common
Would establish a precedent
The common is too small to hold so much stuff.
For: Town pride
Alternatives: Place it at the depot or at the high school or Birch Meadow
Clay volunteered to write a letter to the town manager to voice the commission's
objections and make recommendations of other locations. Or possible reevaluation
if it is not maintained.
Roberta made a motion that Clay write the town manager about the objection of the
commission to the intention to place a sign on the common. The sign would have
a negative impact on the common. Approved 5-0-0.
Office: Roberta feels we should give up our desk and incorporate our files in the
archives. Our mail box is in CPDC. There are some maps in CPDC as well.
The record for the Foster-Emerson House Collection arrived from the Library of
Congress today and was presented by Louise.
CPA study committee meeting is this Thursday, Nov. 1 at RMLD at 7:30. $30 would
be the average tax increase. Virginia moved that the RHC support the
recommendations to town meeting of the CPA committee. 5-0-0
