Call to order: 7:35
Minutes of Feb.12 approved as amended.
Dowd Medical Building (107 Woburn St.) Clay showed the plans to the commission.
He has not yet received the elevation plans.
Nextel has not contacted the town about testing for a celluslar phone tower.
1375 Main St. went down Feb. 28th. The commission expects $20,000 before the
developer begins construction. Clay asked for suggestions from the floor on ways to
spend the money.
Hiring experts to give advice to homeowners. Web design.
Hiring clerical help for the archives.
Seed money for matching grants.
Short term loan to a group like the RHA to move an historic house.
To purchase the 1765 map.
Funds to attend preservation meetings.
Renovations on the repository.
Clay suggested the name of Horace Wadlin for the Old Police Station Parking lot.
Spence Farm: Two adjoining properties are also for sale. The town will most likely not
develop the land itself. Archstone wants to make about 240 units. This would give
enough affordable units to put Reading up 50% towards its quota. Treasurer's report:
530.93 went back to the trust. $700 needs to be spent by June.
The owners of the property at 38 Salem St. joined the meeting.
Laura and Dan Towse
Clay introduced the members and explained the purpose of the commission. The
house at 38 Salem St. is on the National Register as well as the local inventory.
Virginia told the commission about the history of the house. The owners are
considering demolishing and making a multi-unit dwelling. We'll meet the owners
Sunday, March 17 at 3:30 at the house.
Melendy papers (including deeds and letters) were given to the commission by the
New Hampshire Historical Society in November of last year. The owners (Ellison M.
Carey) of the material asked us to sign a tax declaration.
Clay suggeted we spend $300 to hire a typist for the archives. We also need to print
the 2nd half of the inventory.
Roberta suggested a slide show for preservation week to show detail from historic
properties in Reading. Louise suggested l at point show. The issue of a digital
camera came up. Roberta made a motion that Mark find and urchase a camera with a
wide angle lens. He can spend up to a $1000 with accessories (hefty flash, accessible to
macs and pcs, extra batteries). The money will come from Preservation trust grant and
the Special account. Approved 5-0-0 Roberta made a motion to reimburse $150 for
Clay to go to the Restoration and Renovation conference. 4-0-0 Next meeting April 2
