HomeMy WebLinkAbout1999-01-11 Council on Aging MinutesCouncil on Aging January 11, 1999 Berger Room Town Hall 16 Lowell Street Reading, MA 01867-2684 Present: Dave Brigham, Gladys Cail, Dottye Foxon, Edwina Kasper, Joanne O'Brien, Gay Williams, Lois Bond Excused: Mary Andreola, Betty Cronin, Beth Moore, Joanne Wooldridge Vice Chairperson Dotty Foxon called the meeting to order at 7:05 P.M. Minutes of the December 14, 1998 meeting were moved by Dave Brigham and seconded by Gay Williams 6-0-0 Financial report was moved by Gay Williams and seconded by Gladys Cail 6-0-0 Administrator's report was moved by Gladys Cail and seconded by Dave Brigham 6-0-0 An extensive discussion centered on a long range planning process. The following topics were considered: home care; institutionalization; Day care; Insurance; Housing; Recreation; Transportation in and out of town; supportive services such as nutrition, shopping, homemaking, personal care, telephone: safety, Ethics; Intergeneration; Communication; Funding; Demographics; Locations of parking; Traffic patterns; Activities. A list was developed of potential committee representation including: Housing complex representatives; Housing Authority; Elder Services; EOEA; Mystic Valley Elder Services; Public Health; Gerontologist; Statistician; Board of Selectem; Consumer; Town Planner; Library. The next meeting we will look at the list and begin to refine and define the topics. Mystic Valley Elder Services is experiencing a decrease in services due to financial reimbursement problems. Homemaker and personal care hours are being cut. The number of clients and the cut in service hours will be requested from MVES. Transportation will also be affected because it is a big budget item for MVES. The new program requests for FY2000 budget were reviewed: (1) The Program Coordinator will be located at the Center to provide a staff presence in the building and address a goal of increasing participation in Center programs and services. (2) A family social worker to address the needs of younger families and individuals who need assistance and access to social services.
