Absent - Dick Anderson Betty Cronin called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. + The minutes &*June meeting were approved - motion by Dottye, 2nd by Carol • Richard presented the Administrator's Report - accepted • Financial report accepted. Richard presented the applications from the Reading Council on Aging to the Executive Office of Transportation & Construction, Mobility Assistance Program, for monies to help purchase a 16-passenger van with a wheelchair lift that will transport people both in and out of Reading for medical appointments. The cost of the van will be approximately $63,000 with the COA paying 20%, about $12,750.00. Richard indicated, whereas the van with the lift would be able to transport frail elders, the Schroeder Fund may be eligible for a portion of the 20% requirement. A commitment is required tonight in order to meet the grant deadline, as the fund will need to be fully authorized under the Burbank Fund with a possible reimbursement from the Shroeder Fund at a later date. Motion made to approve $12,750 to be taken from the Burbank Trust Fund to be used as the COA's portion of the purchase of a 16 passenger van under the State Office of Transportation Mobility Assistance Program. Approved unanimously. • All parts of the application were presented to the Board, explained by Richard and signed. • A. Assurance of Compliance with Title V! of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. + B. Assurance of Nondiscrimination on the Basis of a Disability • Applications approved - motion by Sally, 2nd by Dottye - Approved unanimously. • Betty asked board to approve expenditure of money from the Schroeder Fund, for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for frail, isolated, homebound elders who are alone for the holidays. Complete turkey Dinners, which cost about $9.00 per person, come from Boston Market, and are delivered by volunteers. Usually thirty people receive the meals, Betty asked for $500 for each occasion, up to $1000, • Motion approved by Dottye, 2nd by Sally, All approved. Wakefield COR 7812453325 • There will be an Open House on October 13 at the Senior Center, offering free meals to seniors, up to 70 people, paid for by the COA from the Burbank Trust. Local agencies will be invited to provide information about their services. Community Parish Nursing, Reading Housing Authority, Silver Haired Legislator, will be among those invited. Betty will get some Cook Books from the Hitching Post to have available for sale. Approved by Ruth, 2"d by Carole. All approved. • October 28 will be a Special Meal at the Senior Center with a Halloween Costume party and Entertainment. • Betty said the October Pleasantries will be mailed to all seniors, with a list of all the October activities. • Richard discussed the uses being made of the Burbank Trust's available funds. The board had voted to keep $250,000.00 of the principle on hand at all times and spend the some of the remainder on projects such as the Property Tax Program, entertainment at the Senior Center once a month. and moving the pool table to the fix-it room to free up the downstairs area. • Motion made to allocate $15,750 for the Property Tax Program. Motion made to approve up to $1,000 yearly to pay for entertainment, free birthday lunch, cake from Atlantic at a discount, (they donate ice cream) and gift certificate, By Kristin, 2nd by Edwina. Approved unanimously. Motion to approve $600 from Burbank Trust to move pool table to fix-it room to free up the space for other activities, when the Main room is being used. By Carole, 2"d by Kristin. Approved unanimously. • New program at Center - Ear Coning once a month at a discount. Seems popular. • Election of officers - o Betty Cronin - Chairman o Ruth Goldberg - Vice Chair o Barbara Powers - Secretary o Kristin Loring Kinsella - Secretary Pro Tern All agreed to serve - Approved unanimously New Business: Ideas for new programs - Grandparents Day - Origami - Yellow Dot Program (all medical information is kept in glove compartment in case of accident, Yellow Dot affixed to back window) Smoke Detector Program, Security Check were among the programs discussed.
