Betty Cronin opened the monthly meeting of the Council on Aging at 6:30 p.m. In
attendance were: Betty Cronin, Barbara Powers, Kristin Kinsella, Carol Patterson, Carole
Scrima, Sally Hoyt and Richard Cardillo, Acting Director.. Absent: Dottye Foxon, Dick
Anderson, Edwina Kasper and Ruth Goldberg.
Peter Hechenbleickner, Town Manager introduced Dawn Folopolous, the applicant
selected for the Director's position. Before Dawn entered the room Peter spoke briefly of
the three finalists chosen to be interviewed and the reasons Dawn was selected
Dawn spoke of her previous work experience and her plans for the Director's job. Peter
said her references gave glowing reports of her supervisory abilities in dealing with co-
workers.
A motion made by Kristin Kinsella to approve Dawn for the Elder Services Director's
position, 2nd by Carol Patterson. Unanimously passed.
Peter suggested we discuss the Consultant's Report at next month's meeting and vote on
accepting it. Talked briefly about some of the consultant's recommendations such as
having COA personnel based at the Senior Center full time plus having MVES take back
the financial obligations of the Mealsite Coordinator's job, which the Formula Grant is
now paying.
Sandy Trainer of Community Parish Nursing has made a presentation to the Board of
Selectmen asking for $100,000 to expand their services for the frail elderly in Reading.
She will appear before the Finance Committee to explain her goals and plans for CPN,
such as hiring another Nurse Advocate. The different services for the elderly were
discussed, such as those offered by MVES, the COA, etc. One difference between them
is that with CPN there is no means test.
Motion to accept January minutes by Carol Patterson - 2nd by Carole Scrima. All
approved.
Administrator's report:
The Department of Revenue is holding a meeting on March 16 to explain the Circuit
Breaker Credit. There are probably many more people who could take advantage of it if
they knew about it.
Sally handed out information about Social Security and talked about bills affecting
elderly issues.
New Business -
Betty would like to replace some of the paintings in the Senior Center, which have been
there for a long time. She looked into borrowing from the library, but thought it was too
much trouble. She will look into buying new pictures from the donation fund. Or asking
the Reading Art Association to hang some of their art in the Senior Center.
The meeting adjourned at 8:10.
Next meeting Monday, April 11, 2005 - 6:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted:
