Present: Stacey Bertocchi, Sally Hoyt, Steve Oston, Carol Patterson, Carole
Scrima, Barbara Powers, Marguerite Bosnian, Margaret Havey, Dawn
Folopoulos (Staff), Carol Oniskey (Guest).
Absent: George Lonergan.
Call to Order: 6:30 PM.
Minutes: approved and accepted for 9 June 2008.
Administrator's Report: approved and accepted for June, July and August.
Financial Report: approved and accepted for August 2008
• Staff requested additional funding from the Burbank Trust Fund in the
amount of $1,295 to purchase a used pool table for the senior center
that will replace one extensively worn and water damaged. Motion
approved by a vote of 8-0.
• Staff also requested additional funding from the Burbank Trust Fund
in the amount of $150 to provide a guest speaker--Roberta. Taylor--for
a presentation titled "Creating the Next Chapter of Your Life." This
presentation is aimed at attracting Baby Boomer aged residents and is
scheduled for 21 October at the Aroma Cafe. Motion approved by a
vote of 8-0.
• Staff requested transfer of costs from the Schroeder Trust Fund back
to the Burbank Trust Fund for expenses related to the celebration of
birthdays for senior residents. Increased costs of this activity now
compromise the $1,000 yearly spending limit of the Schroeder Fund.
Motion approved by a vote of 8-0.
Old Business:
• Senior Discount Handbook- It was reaffirmed to initially limit the
survey to local retailers located within approximately one mile of the
downtown area. Subcommittee members are Barbara, Marguerite,
Carol and Steve. Steve will recompile his database of local businesses
and call a subcommittee meeting to plan the survey. Steve and Dawn
will meet to complete a press release requesting information from
local businesses.
New Business:
• The Council endorsed the reappointment of Dawn to the MVES Board
for a three-year term beginning 10 October 2008.
• A shade or other screen is needed for the doorway between two
meeting rooms on the second floor of the Senior Center. Stacey
volunteered to investigate various low-cost options and will speak
with a contractor we have worked with previously.
• Dawn briefed the Council on the new Project SAFE, an MVES
- program to ascertain the needs of elderly residents over the age of
eighty who are currently not MV ES clients. Visiting social workers
will advise the seniors on available services such as transportation.
• The Council has a new Finance Committee Liaison, Jay Tangney.
Steve will contact Jay prior to our next meeting.
• Baby Boomer program (see Financial Report)
• Dawn briefed the Council on a recent eight-town MVES
transportation study, which made favorable mention of the Reading
medical transportation program.
Adjournment: moved to adjourn at 7:50 PM.
Next Meetings: October 20 and November 17.
