Council on Aging Board Meeting
April 12, 2010
Reading Senior Center Game Room 2010 JUN 15 A H: 39
Present: Stacey Bertocchi, Steve Oston, Marguerite Bosnian, Erica Deane, Margaret
Havey, George Lonergan, Carol Oniskey, Carole Scrima and Dawn Folopoulos (Staff.
Absent: Gina Nelson and Sally Hoyt
Call to Order: 6:32 PM
Minutes: Approved for March 8, 2010.
Administrator's Report: Approved.
• The Administrator reported on the recent flooding of the Senior Center basement.
Intelligent planning and excellent communications by staff with seniors
considerably reduced the impact of flooding on operations of the Center. The
installation of a sump pump is scheduled and should mitigate future water
damage.
Financial Report: Approved.
• Attendance at the Senior Center movie program is been disappointingly low,
especially considering the efforts required to conduct it on a weekly basis. We are
moving in the direction of a monthly movie provided via a subscription to Netflix
at a nominal cost.
• The annual dinner to recognize volunteers has, in the past, been run by The
Reading Firefighters Association, with monetary donations from local businesses.
Because of the recent economic downturn, such contributions are not forthcoming
for this year's event. To prevent cancellation of the dinner, scheduled for May 3,
it was moved and seconded to provide funds up to $750 from the Burbank Trust
Fund to purchase food and supplies. The motion passed by a vote of 8-0-0.
Old Business:
• Based on a request from a previous Council meeting, the Administrator reviewed
spending under account #15415540 540000, supplies and equipment, for Elder
Services in FY09 and FY10 (to date).
• Looking for solutions to the noise problem in the vicinity of the Senior Center
reception desk continues. A glass enclosure will likely not be acceptable owing to
its relatively high cost. The Administrator will investigate purchase of a headset
for the receptionist and report back to the Council at its May meeting.
• The Council discussed what activities, prizes and displays should be provided at
the Elder Services Friends" and Family Day table on June 19. Raffles anchor a
spinning wheel were considered. A subcommittee meeting will be held at 5 PM
on tApril 26 at the Center to further refine these choices. A final list of AM and
PM table volunteers will be compiled at the regular May Council meeting.
New Business:
• The Administrator solicited suggestions and volunteers from the Council
regarding the Memorial Day celebration to be held at RMHS on May 25 and
featuring the Singing State Trooper. More information about and advertising of
this free event needs to happen in order for it to be a success. Council members
did volunteer to distribute advertising material strategically around town and look
into RCTV participation.
• The topic of COA Board projects was deferred to the next meeting as the Board
was fully engaged in short-term activities.
Adjournment: 7:55 PM.
Next meeting: May 10, 2010.
Respectfully Submitted,
Steve OSton, Secretary
