Introductory meeting 8-9-05 at 7PM
Members and attendees introduced themselves.
Members: Ron Daddario, Gina Snyder, Steve Goldy r
Attendees: Stephanie Anderberg, Ray Porter and guest, Kim. Lundgren from ICLEI
ICLEI presentation by Kim Lundgren. ICLEI represents local governments for
sustainability, it's an international association of local governments that has three Major
campaigns that it sponsors, of which the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) is one.
Kim represents the Northeast regional center, New England, New York and New Jersey,
she previously worked on energy and the environment for the city of Medford.
CCP includes the whole town, the schools, the DPW and all the municipality. You take a
baseline and then see what the town can do to work toward reducing greenhouse gas
emissions. It's a 5 milestone process, but none of the steps are binding, for which ICLEI
provides a framework and some software, but doesn't say what any town should or
shouldn't do. Towns get help by letting ICLEI know what they need from the
organization, networking and the software to do the calculations of emissions. Kim
strongly recommends that the town hall staff own the information - that the inventory
and software be installed on a town computer. It usually takes about three months to put
the inventory together with a part time staff member working on it:
Municipal side:
Municipal buildings
Schools
Fleet
Police
DPW
Fire
Water/sewer utility
Community:
Residential, Commercial, Industrial - numbers often come from electric, gas and
oil companies (often oil use is based on assumptions after gas and electric has
been accounted for)
Regional Transport
VMT for town
Other ICLEI campaigns include Cities 21 (fee for service) and a Water campaign that is
currently being revamped.
They have a program on urban heat islands and are part of MA clean energy program
Bottom line - the program helps towns help themselves - as much or as little as they
want
The committee decided to meet with the town manager to identify personnel availability
and when we need to put presentations together. Meetings will be posted by Ron for Aug.
30, Sept.6 and 20.
-Steve will call or email Kim to see about job descriptions and how to get an intern, and a
copy of any resolutions that ICLEI has as models.
-Later the committee can contact business owners and RMLD
-Ray will seek other plans and programs and find out who in the government is the
contact (Medford, Cambridge, Somerville)
-Stephanie offered to find if there are examples to offer right away about what simple
things towns have done that created savings
