Reading Advisory Committee on Cities for Climate Protection Program
Committee Notes for March 22, 2006
Present were Stephanie Anderberg, Michele Benson, Ron Daddario, Gina Snyder,
and Tracy Sopchak.
Votes: Meeting minutes from 3-8-06 were accepted.
The committee discussed the successful presentation to the RMLD Board of
Directors on March 16th by Ron, with Michele and Gina in attendance. From
the discussion, the committee decided to: - Continue to follow the progress
of the green energy program to see if it can be incorporated into outreach
and the "1 -2-3" pledge;
- Encourage the town to implement energy efficiency projects and take
advantage of the rebate program of the RMLD for municipal buildings (est. to
be around a 30% rebate);
Consider what connections might be made with Pat Schettini at the High
"School (who also attended the meeting of the RMLD Board and expressed an
interest in energy efficiency projects).
Stephanie said that Cambridge is beginning a food waste compost program with
a vendor and that there might be an opportunity for other towns in the area
to join if this pilot is successful. It's not clear whether Reading has any
establishments that produce enough food waste, but Stephanie will report
back as the Cambridge pilot progresses.
The publicity blurb was in the 'Reading Advocate' on March 16, 2006.
Stephanie sent it to the 'Chronicle', 'Globe' and 'Herald' as well as to the
Town Manager for the town newsletter. Michele gave it to the RMLD
newsletter. The committee will look into a web page and scheduling
information with RCTV. Gina will set up a mail group on the ReadingmassCCP
hotmail account for the committee.
The notice for the intern was sent to Harvard, Tufts, MIT, Plymouth State,
Salem State, and Umass-Lowell. Ron offered to take it to the High School,
Gina will check with biology teacher, Martha Moore, about the process for
posting it at the High School.
Ron checked with the Atlantic Market, CVS and Brooks about matching our
r. ~h
funds for the re-useable shopping bags. They indicated that they think we
need bigger bags and the Atlantic owner is on vacation. Stephanie will look
into larger sizes.

The committee discussed the mailing from Park Square at Reading and thought
it would be good for each member and other interested parties to respond to
the developer's request to "Tell us What You Think" with suggestions for
making the development a model of green planning by incorporating many green
and socially beneficial elements to their design. The contact: Brian Sciera,
W/S Development, 1330 Boylston St. Chestnut Hill MA 02467,

Tracy provided a review of the 1999 UCS "Consumers Guide to Effective
Environmental Choices" which empowers people to make changes in their buying
and resource usage. The book helps to focus on the big things rather than
targeting every aspect of resource use, which can otherwise be overwhelming.
The nice thing about the book is that it gives real choices for personal
change and these ideas will help inform our 1-2-3 pledge. Tracy will check
to see if there is a newer version.
Michele has downloaded the software and will be looking into putting in the
electric utility portion of the data that is needed. Tracy also down loaded
it too. Michele will re-send the message with the information on how to
download.
Town meeting begins April 24th. Tracy volunteered to make a short
presentation - a quick update on our activities to date.
April 29th works as the date for the pot luck at Ron's house. Time suggested
was 5:30.
