August 23, 2006 Reading Advisory Committee on Cities for Climate Protection Committee minutes for August 23, 2006 Present were Stephanie Anderberg, Michele Benson, Dan Blodgett, Ray Porter, Tracy Sopchak The minutes for August 9, 2006's meeting were accepted. Discussion on the Business 123 Pledge were held. Kudos to Stephanie and Gina for the development and write-up and Tracy for format and publication. Again, a job well done. Ray had inquired how we were progressing on getting the Pledge to the local R_ oand Chamber for their review and input. Michele is working with Priscilla r( ooff; 1v Sam er and Laurie Cavagnaro (Rotary), to see if they will present it for reviewing and feedback. We want the Pledge to be review prior to Ray's speaking engagements so that he will have the opportunity for feedback on those occasions. Ray is ready for his engagements with the Rota and Clamber. Tracy up dated the committee on the posting of the 123 Pledge in the Town Hall, Library and one will be placing one at REI-she and Dan set a day Tracy could drop off REI's display. Stephanie and Tracy are going to work on the decal sticker that will be used for the 123 Business Pledge. Tracy is going to check out AC Mores and Stephanie is looking into some companies she is familiar with. So of the prices Stephanie has seen so far are high for small amounts. She has the idea of possible printing our own. The data collection is at a stand still at present. Michele spoke with Mary Delai at the Renewable Forum and asked about the data collection. Michele's impression was that they have not been working to diligently-if at all, on it. Mary commented that she had been busy with the fiscal budget. Michele is going to contact the DPW again also. If no progress is made by the next meeting, than other actions maybe necessary. Michele is going to do a promotional letter for the GREEN CHOICE rate from the committee-using RMLD's promos. Discussion on the School Committee taking the pledge. There did not appear to be any connections in our group to the School Committee members to make contact. Stephanie was going to look into ;making contact to set this in motion. Tracy briefed the group on ICLEI's Belmont meeting of August 11. Approximately 30 peopled attended and she found it very informative to listen to what others were doing and see Kim in action. Tracy 8/28/06 rage vi mentioned that they did discuss the availability of funds to get energy conservation projects in place. "Don't pay in capital, pay in savings." Up to 20 years to pay back. The ENERGY STAR program for businesses is looking very favorable. EPA did presentations at the Belmont and Salem. Municipals and businesses can benchmark their facilities against other in their class on-line for free. ENERGY STAT has a certification program that may be more productive then LEED since it is free and more businesses and the municipals are likely to participate. This seems like a positive goal for the committee to promote this program. Dan may put REI though the software to see how difficult it is to do. Mary Delai seemed very interested in the ENERGY STAR software also and possible this may get the data-collecting going. The committee felt it would be good to have all the municipals buildings done in conjunction with the CCP software project as a comparison aide when making a plan of action. It was suggested to link the School Committee to getting the data for the ENERGY STAR and the CCP's need data. Stephanie mentioned seeing something about a home generator for heating (Honda). Michele said she thought Braintree had a home generator pilot program going and would check into it. Ray gave a briefing on how the process would work but did not hear of them for the home. The group went up stairs to view Tracy's 123 Pledge display and we adjoined from there. Next Meeting September 13th. 8/28/06
