Committee Notes for April 23, 2008 (Next Meeting - May 14'h at Town Hall)
Committee Meeting 7:00 PM, present were Gina Snyder, Ron D'Addario, Michele Benson, Tracy Sopchak and
Sophie Gellot.
Welcome - Chair Michele Benson opened the meeting, welcoming all present.
Minutes - A motion was made and to approve the minutes from the April 9th meeting. Minutes were
approved unanimously.
Earth Day - Congratulations to all for another great Earth Day Fair!!
Earth Day Redux, mainly traffic - Discussed the traffic for the Recycle drop off. Thanks to RMLD for the
police detail (they even had to move traffic to second driveway for part of the time.) Thinking that it probably
wouldn't be as big next year if we worked with Reading Recycles (RR) again, because there was pent up demand,
but, options for a better flow were discussed :
Separate into smaller items and larger (possibly with a wheelbarrow? To move the goods)
Divide traffic up by small or large items and have smaller items possibly drop and exit by RCTV -
Have the trucks in the middles, and the traffic split to each side.
Sophie reported that they don't have a count on totals except that there were 116 TV's, 3 with wood frames. The
cost was less than expected, so RR has some funds to help with their website. Next year, the state will have some
regulations or incentives that could result in larger savings.
Tracy got 100 surveys! Yay Tracy - lots of good work.
Future: May need to have a policy for if individuals or groups show up without having registered.
Future idea from RMLD assisting with Teredyne Earth Day fair - they had an organic farmer from Salisbury,
so we may want to contact for next year.
Future: need to address solar with a display/vendor.
MPO - Info was covered in Chronicle and Advocate. While CO2 savings admittedly small, we must acknowledge
the need for an alternative if we are suggesting people cut back on driving in SOVs.
We will follow up with MassRIDES.
Friend and Family day is JUNE 20 We have a table. Everyone to please look at calendars and let
Michele know when you are available that day. Do you have a tent, literature, table, or other outreach?
Agreed: The pledge should be around the concept of using 10% less energy. Average usage for a home has
increased over the years in the United States. Used to be around 11,800 KWH per year on average. Michele will
find numbers for Reading (although we all know that our carbon footprint is not all "electric").
Everyone should look at the charts of programs, priorities and assignments from previous meetings. Think about
what each of us would want to work on. Be prepared to discuss at next meeting, May 14tf', including: what would
be the top four or five, and how would we do it, subcommittees that report back each meeting or monthly.
Next meeting May 14
