HomeMy WebLinkAbout1993-09-14 Board of Cemetery Trustees Minutes Town of Reading Board of Cemetery Trustees Meeting Tuesday - September 14, 1993 Pursuant to a meeting legally posted, the meeting of September 141 1993 convened at 7 : 30 P.M. in the Arnold Berger Room, Town Hall Annex. Present: Joyce K. Miller, Chairman Daniel F. Driscoll, Secretary Carl H. Amon, Jr. Edward F. Fuller John Silvaggi James J. Sullivan, Jr. Director Robert Keating of the Cemetery Division was also present. 1. Secretary's Report On a motion by Mr. Amon, seconded by Mr. Driscoll it was unani- mously voted to accept the Secretary's minutes of the June 1, 1993 Trustee meeting. 2 . Election of Officers Chairman Miller who has served four years as Chairman requested that a rotation of this position was in order. Mr. Amon speaking for the entire Board commended Mrs. Miller for the excellent leadership during the last four years. A nomination of Mr. Silvaggi for Chairman was made by Mr. Fuller, seconded by Mr. Driscoll and was unanimously accepted by the Board. On a motion by Mr. Silvaggi, seconded by Mr. Fuller to activate the position of Vice-Chairman was unanimously passed by the Board. A motion by Mr. Sullivan, seconded by Mr. Amon that Mrs. Miller serve as Vice-Chairman was unanimously voted by the Board. On a motion by Mr. Sullivan, seconded by Mr. Fuller that Mr. Driscoll continue as Secretary was unanimously voted by the Board. 3 . Review of Summer Projects Director Keating reported on the following: a) Cemetery Garage - roof repaired and shingled, gutters re- placed, garage painted. b) Cemetery gates painted. c) Two summer employees under a Federal fund were utilized to trim all markers. d) Front-end loader - bids are out - cost should be in the range of $34, 000. 00. e) Laurel Hill - the 37 graves previously marked out have been sold except for one 4 grave lot. Forty eight new grave spaces have been marked along the Main Street wall and 52 graves were established in Lots that were inactive for fifty years and had been previously posted. The total added graves to Laurel Hill during 1993 is 137. Forty monuments which were tipped were re-set, this included foundations. f) Charles Lawn: Two sections of new roads were constructed by DPW employees, the only cost to the Cemetery Department was materials. - 22 , 000 square feet on left side were graded - will be seeded this fall. A question arose of using a second entrance to Cemetery where the wall ends on the left side. Director Keating will check with Police Chief re: any imput i.e. traffic etc. , and report back at the next meeting. . 4 . Franklin Street Cemetery Vice Chairman Miller reported that the Town Manager has requested a letter from the Trustees authorizing him to attempt a land swap with the owner of approximately two acres of land-locked property adjacent to the Cemetery. Chairman Silvaggi will coordinate the drafting of a letter with Director Keating. Director Keating was requested to draw up what activities or projects that the various Town departments could assist the Cemetery Department in the preliminary development of the Franklin Street Cemetery. 5. Personnel John Whalen, Cemetery Department Crewmaster notified the Chairman by letter that he will retire as of February 1, 1994. Director Keating will have the job posted this fall. 6. Receipts Director Keating furnished the Trustees with copies of the receipts from the Sale of Lots and Miscellaneous charges, - July through September 1, 1993 . 7 . Transfer of Funds Director Keating advised that he will need a transfer of funds, for Cemetery not buy backs. This request will be presented at the next Town Meeting. S.
