Board of Cemetery Trustees r~j
Tuesday, May 6, 1997
Pursuant to a meeting notice legally posted, the meeting of May 6, 1997 convened at 7:30 P.M. in
the Berger Room, Reading Town Hall Annex, Reading, MA.
Present: Daniel F. Driscoll, Chairman
John Silvaggi, Vice-Chairman
Mary Vincent, Secretary
William Brown
Randolph Harrison
Roc O'Connell
Robert Keating, Superintendent of Cemeteries was also in attendance.
Review of Past Meeting Minutes
On a motion by Randolph Harrison, seconded by Roc O'Connell, the minutes of the April 2, 1997
meeting were accepted unanimously.
Memorial Day Preparations
Superintendent Keating reported that although the weather has been cold and the growing season
at least two weeks late in starting, the Cemeteries have been mowed. Robert Mohla donated the
use of his hydroseeding machine which was able to do a months worth of work in one week.
Temporary help has been hired: two long-term people (April - December) and two short-term
people (June - August). Frank Driscoll will again take care of flames and flags for Veterans
Graves. The water ban is still a problem - on May 13, 1997 the Selectmen are holding a hearing
about this. William Brown suggested that a water tank truck purchase might be beneficial.
Laurel Hill Restoration Projects
The 1865 marble monument inscripted with the names of the Civil War Veterans is becoming
unreadable. Laurel Hill is on the National Registry and is eligible for funding from the State in the
form of a grant. Superintendent Keating is in the process of finding out more about the money
which could be available to resurface and reletter this monument.
Woodend Update
The National Guard will donate one weekend in June and one weekend in July to haul fill from
Strout Avenue to the Back of Woodend. Meals and fuel for trucks will be provided by the Town.
The drainage system is working as it should at the site.
