The Board discussed the request by the Town Manager and the Board of Selectmen to underwrite

After explanation by Bob Keating that the Trustees could grant the request as it did last year in the
short run, but if the Trustees continued to do so, the long range goal of being self sufficient would not

$25,000.00 Cemetery subsidy
The Cemetery Board of Trustees voted on December 5,2000, five to one, to approve the request
of the Town Manager for an additional 25,000.00 to supplement the DPW budget for FY 2002.
The monies will come from the Cemetery bequest fund.
The Board is making this contribution for the second consecutive year in response to the
extreme fiscal restraints the town has encountered. This additional request for monies is placing
a fiscal strain on an already inadequate bequest fund. The Board's opinion was that it cannot
continue to make these contributions without adversely affecting the bequest fund. The board will
take any further requests on an individual basis.

Dear Mary:
On behalf of the Board of Selectmen and the community, I want to thank the Board of Cemetery
Trustees for their cooperation in agreeing to fund an additional $25,000 for FY2002 to help
offset some of the "overhead" costs of the cemetery. This is, in fact, a time of extreme fiscal
distress, and your cooperation and continuing to work with the Town on matters like this is very
much appreciated. This kind of cooperation is what makes Reading the kind of community that
it is.
in er y,
Peter I. Hechenbleikner
Town Manager
