Attendance: Donna Griffith, Tina Truedson, Klaus Kubierschky, Tom O'Rourke, Ken
Holbrook, Dan Berry, David Bryant
Dan Berry opened the meeting with a thought.
Donna Griffith reported on the Winter Program Session Pool schedule and said that we
had more than 900 kids participating in the swim programs and that use has continued to
be steady on weekends and during open times. Donna also reported that the Spring I
session is anticipated to be much busier than the Winter session.
Donna handed out the Pool facility feedback form for a final edit to the AAB (Aquatics
Advisory Board) and would be handing the form out to parents to help the AAB evaluate
different aspects of the pool and the facilities.
Ken Holbrook talked about the Boys Swim Team season and the successes they had.
Ken also talked about wanting to host a Boys Championship Swim meet for the 2001-'02
season and requested an estimate from the YMCA of how much that would cost. Dan
and Donna estimatede that it would be around $500 dollars but would check around with
some other YMCA's to see what they would charge.
Dan brought up the topic of the Burbank YMCA swim team and some issues some
parents had with the head coach. Dan said that a Confidential Survey was being mailed
out to each family who was on the current roster of the swim team. The surveys would
be mailed directly to Pete Smargon and would be evaluated by him and his staff by the
end of March.
A discussion took place about the purpose of the AAB and it was determined that we
would follow the following guidelines:
Goals of the Board were discussed:
1. To review the Benefits Schedule between the Town and the Burbank YMCA, and
to make sure that the items in the collaboration are addressed and met.
2. To advise the Burbank YMCA Board and Aquatics Department of scheduling
problems and issues that may arise as well as possible solutions to the issues.
Roles and Responsibilities of the Aquatics Advisory Board were discussed:
1. We should be the eyes and ears for the town and the YMCA so that we can
address issues as they arise.
2. We will work together to strategize possible solutions of the issues that will be
brought before us as a board.
Awareness to the YMCA members and Town Residents:
1. The Board agreed that it is important to let the members and the town residents
know that there is such a board in existence to discuss aquatic issues.
2. Plans to make people aware of the Boards existence included flyers in the facility
and items in the Chronicle.
After discussing the purpose for a short time the topic shifted when Ken Holbrook
brought up that there was a group of Reading Residents who were not pleased with how
the YMCA was operating the pools and were questioning if the YMCA was meeting its
contractual agreement. It was agreed that the AAB would review the contract and
discuss the details at the next meeting in March. Dan said that he would mail the contract
out before the meeting in March.
Dan talked about the pool acoustics and said that they were still looking for a sound
engineer to come and do a test.
Dan talked about a unique fundraiser called "Underwater Monopoly" which they plan on
running in April to help with the YMCA's Reachout Campaign for 2001.
With the meeting running over the scheduled time the AAB adjourned.
th
The next AAB meeting was scheduled for March 26.
