Attendance: Donna Griffith, Tina Truedson, Klaus Kubierschky, Tom O'Rourke, Ken
Holbrook, Dan Berry, David Bryant
Dan Berry opened the meeting with a thought.
Donna went over the Pool facility feedback form. We have received back about 20
surveys and are still waiting for more to come back. Donna will have a summary ready
of the surveys for the next AAB meeting.
The Underwater Monopoly fundraiser is scheduled for Sunday 4/29 from 9:00am-
7:00pm. Registration packets are available at the Burbank and Wakefield Branches. We
are hoping to have 40 divers participate in the event.
The remainder of the meeting was spent going over the Contract between the town of
Reading and the Burbank YMCA. The AAB went over each topic in the benefits
schedule and the following issues were covered.
1. SUMMER OPEN SWIM- The YMCA was doing a good job of meeting the
requirements of the summer open swim for Reading residents. The YMCA
needs to develop a Summer Seasonal pass for families and individual
participants. Donna and Dan estimated that the pass would cost somewhere
around $100 and would be valid from July l st through August 17th. It was
pointed out by Dan Berry that the Reading Rec Dept. printed out the first year
rates (2000) for use of the pool at the YMCA in their town publication. The
rates for 2001 have changed and were increased by $1 according to the
agreement. The YMCA had an increase of 932 guest passes that it gave out in
the summer months of July and August. This amounted to
2. SUMMER SWIM PROGRAM- The summer swim program for the Parks and
Recreation summer camp was found to be going well and met the terms of the
agreement
3. SWIM LESSON FEES- A cost breakdown of the summer swim classes was
done by Nate Tarin (Marketing Director) and Dan Berry. It was found that
there was a small difference in the price of running an 8 week class at the
YMCA and running the same classes at the former Grant pool. The YMCA
classes were found to be slightly more expensive by around $.25 per class for
an 8 week program. The largest discrepancy in price was found for non-
member Reading residents.
4. RMHS INTERSCHOLASTIC SWIMMING-Some issues were raised about
"preferential" swim times for the RMHS Swim Teams. The practice times for
the swim teams were very good and both the boys and girls teams were
- satisfied with the practice times. It was brought up by Ken Holbrook that
other meet times needed to be made available for the swim teams. Dan Berry
and Donna Griffith said that they should be able to offer some meet times on
Friday nights. Dan also stated that it would be difficult to have meets on
Monday thru Thursday nights because of the many programs going on in the
pool in the evenings from water aerobics to masters swim team to the Burbank
YMCA Swim Team. It was also stated by Dan Berry that the YMCA did not
charge the Boys High School Swim Team for the past 2 seasons for use of the
pool because of budget limitations with the High School Athletic department.
Gate receipts for High School Swim meets were not being divided between
the athletic department and the YMCA. Dan Berry stated that the YMCA was
not looking to take gate fees from the HS Swim programs.
5. FEES- Dan and Donna stated that Reading Residents were receiving 10% off
of all of the YMCA's membership fees. This will continue for the next 8
years.
6. LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM- In cooperation with the Reading School
Superintendent's office the "Learn to Swim Program" was offered to all
children entering kindergarten. The program is an 8-week lesson that was
offered free of charge. In 2000 Reading residents redeemed $5346.25 in
program fees.
It was discussed by the AAB that the YMCA was doing a good job of meeting the
requirements of the contract between the town and the YMCA. Ken Holbrook
brought up various issues that had come up before the writing of the contract and
was representing a group of people that were not satisfied with many issues
surrounding the construction and programming of the pool. The issues brought
up by Ken included,
- Preferential pool times for swim meets other than Saturday afternoons
- Use of the pool for physical education classes for the middle school
and High School
Seating for major events, like USS swim meets and championships
- Having a lap lane open during all hours of operation
- Transportation to the YMCA to use the pool for therapy and exercise
for active older adults
With time expiring the AAB decided to adjourn the meeting and continue
discussion at the next meeting.
Next AAB Meeting is scheduled for April 30th at
6:30pm.
