BURBANK YMCA AQUATICS ADVISORY BOARD MEETING MINUTES - 9/24/01 Attendance: Donna Griffith, Mark Hyson, Klaus Kubierschky, Tom O'Rourke, Dan Berry, Cam Townsend ABSENT: Tina Truedson, David Bryant, Ken Holbrook Tom O'Rourke opened the meeting with a thought. Donna Griffith reported that the Burbank YMCA pool had 697 total participants in classes each week during the summer. That was an increase from last years participation. Donna told us that they did not do a count for participants during the open rec and family swim times but that she and her staff noticed an increase in participation during those times. She had more lifeguards on deck during busy times this summer than in the previous summer season. Donna also talked about the "Split" session that the YMCA tried this summer (2 classes per week for 4 weeks instead of 1 class a week for 8 weeks) and said that she has received mixed reviews from program participants on the schedule and is leaning towards not running it the same way next summer (2002). Donna also reviewed the upcoming Fall I session Pool Schedule. It was pointed out that the time for NO Lap swim Shifted from 3:00-5:00pm to 3:30-5:30pm. Tom O'Rourke and Klaus Kubierschky pointed out that this shift in time may create some problems with lap swim participants who come after work to workout. Donna explained that there was a need to change the time to accommodate a new swim club program and also an increase number of YMCA swim participants from 80 to 105. It was recommended by Tom, Klaus and Dan Berry that we tentatively make the change but to see what type of response we get from lap swimmers. Donna agreed that if it was an issue with a large number of lap swimmers that we would make provisions to move it back. Dan Berry presented the results of the pool acoustics to the AAB. It was discussed that the installation of the acoustical absorption materials would be postponed because of budget limitations that the YMCA has until the end of the year. Tom O'Rourke made a motion that the results be reviewed when the AAB had better attendance. It was agreed and moved on through the agenda. The High School Swim Teams were discussed for the Boys and the Girls teams. Dan Berry pointed out that the Girls swim team failed to contact the YMCA about when they were starting and showed up to swim on 9/27. Dan explained that he talked with Phil Vaccaro the Athletic Director at Reading HS and informed him that the coach failed to report when they were starting their season. The AD reported that it was the coaches responsibility to report when they were starting and that he would speak to Lois Margeson, the girls HS swim team coach. Dan Berry informed the AAB that he spoke with the Reading Police Dept about issues surrounding parking at the YMCA. The PD explained that we should put out signs informing people that the YMCA parking lot is for patrons of the Y only. The officer stated that if we were still encountering a problem that we can put indiv. Signs on there windows saying that we will be towing their car if they continued to park in the lot. Dan talked about the "Learn to Swim program and informed the AAB that he would be handing out the free swim class voucher to all Reading Kindergarten students by the end of September. In other business Mark Hyson, Reading Parks & Recreation Director informed the AAB that the town will be hosting a Halloween parade on Birch Meadow Drive on October 27th and the Rotary Road Race will be on October 28th. Mark said that Birch Meadow Drive would be closed from about 9:00am-12:00pm on both days. With time expired the meeting was adjourned. NEXT AAB MEETING WILL BE ON 9/24/01
