Aquatic Advisory Board
Meeting Minutes
Monday, March 29, 2004

The Board met at the Burbank YMCA in Reading. Chairman Thomas O'Rourke called the
meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. Klaus Kubierschky was designated recording secretary for the
meeting. The following members were in attendance:

Chairman O'Rourke offered an inspirational thought based on a study by the University of
California, San Francisco which found objective evidence of the beneficial effects of smiling:
SMILE: It's contagious!!!
February Minutes
Cam Townsend pointed out that she was present at the February Board meeting. The Board
unanimously voted to accept the minutes of the February 23 meeting as corrected.
New Staff Member
Jason Parry was introduced as a new staff member assigned to the Board. He replaces Amy
Vendt who was recently promoted to a more senior position within the YMCA of Greater Boston.
Pool Usage
Donna Griffith presented the aquatics participation for the year to date. At least partly due to the
maintenance problems that were experienced in January there was a substantial decline in
participation both for adult and pre-school age groups. Nevertheless, youth participation
experienced an increase. The Board expressed an interest in a year-to-year comparison that could
be provided at a future meeting. Swim voucher redemption will be reviewed with year to year
statistics at the April AAB meeting.
Maintenance Problems
Dan Berry provided an in-depth description of the maintenance problems that forced closure of
the pool for several days at the beginning of the year. Problems partly related to the design of the
climate control system were severely aggravated by the protracted extremely cold weather that
was experienced at that time. The system installed at the Burbank YMCA is a prototype system.
Therefore, it did not benefit from experiences reaped from prior installations of similar systems.
Because of this, the sizing of certain parts of the system was found, after initial operation, to be
marginal and unable to maintain a suitable environment under extreme conditions. This had two
