HomeMy WebLinkAbout1999-02-10 Recreation Committee MinutesRecreation Committee Minutes ; Wednesday, February 10, 1999 A It: The Recreation Committee meeting came to order at 7:30 PM in the Town Hall Conference Room. Committee members in attendance included Alan Beaulieu, Dennis Lucyniak, Dave Bryant, Sue Cavicchi, Jack Downing and Claire Bolger. Also in attendance were Associate Member Marc Nelson, Associate Member Sudie Fay and Recreation Administrator Joe Connelly. Mark Nelson, Dave Bryant, and Dennis Lucyniak volunteered to assist with the Easter Egg Hunt on March 27 . Mr. Beaulieu made a motion to approve the minutes of the Wednesday, January 13, 1999 meeting, Mr. Lucyniak seconded the motion, approved 5-0-1. RYB REQUEST FOR BATTING CAGE AT HUNT MEMORIAL PARK Mr. Mike DiCicco of Reading Youth Baseball reviewed his organizations request for the installation of a batting cage at Hunt Memorial Park. Mr. Connelly reviewed the plans and hearing procedure for this project. The Committee discussed their concerns with Mr. DiCicco. The Committee discussed the following issues: 1. Concerns of abutters 2. The maintenance of the facility 3. Whether or not the facility should be locked 4. The facility design 5. Funding for the facility 6. Placement of the facility in respect to conservation land Committee Member Kate Kaminer entered the meeting at 7:50 PM. Mr. Downing commented that it may not be legal to lock a facility on public park land. Mr. Connelly explained that it may reduce the liability of individuals climbing over the structure if the facility was not locked. Mr. Beaulieu made the following motion, seconded by Mrs. Cavicchi, and approved 6-0-1 (Mr. Lucyniak being the one abstention). Move that the Recreation Committee take under advisement the request for a batting cage at Hunt Memorial Park as a recommendation for a viable solution to the existing field shortage dilemma, for both the Town and Reading Youth Baseball. A Public Hearing should be scheduled for March 3, 1999 at 7:30 PM to discuss this matter in greater detail. Mr. DiCicco exited the meeting at 8 PM. Committee Member Chris Campbell entered the meeting at 8:02 PM RYB REQUEST FOR SPECIAL PERMIT Reading Youth Baseball presented a request for a special permit for Sunday, June 13, 1999 and Sunday, June 27, 1999 to begin play at 10 AM. The Committee discussed the request. The request was approved by the Committee 7-0-1 on a motion by Mrs. Kaminer, seconded by Mrs. Cavicchi. Dennis Lucyniak Abstained from the vote. RECREATION ADMINISTRATORS REPORT Mr. Connelly reviewed the Administrators Report. The Committee and Mr. Connelly discussed the following issues: Symonds Way, Field Signs, T-Ball, Joshua Eaton School Playground, Basketball Programs, Golf League and Web Sites. REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS Mr. Connelly asked for volunteers to assist with the following Committees: Millenium Committee, Earth Day Committee, and the Substance Abuse Committee. There were no volunteers for any of the Committees. The Committee discussed when to conduct their next meeting. The Committee decided to hold their next meeting on March 3, 1999. Mrs. Cavicchi motioned to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Mr. Campbell, approved 8-0. The Recreation Committee adjourned at 9:20 PM.
