Recreation Committee Minutes Wednesday, September 8, 1999 The Recreation Committee meeting came to order at 7:4 0 PM in the Conference Room of Reading Town Hall. Committee members in attendance included, Alan Beaulieu, Chairman Jack Downing, Kate Kaminer, Sue Cavicchi, Dennis Lucyniak and Vice Chairman Dave Bryant. Also in attendance were Associate Member Sudie Faye and Recreation Administrator Joe Connelly. Ms. Kaminer made a motion to approve the minutes of the Wednesday, August 11, 1999 meeting. Mr. Beaulieu seconded the motion, minutes approved 5-0-1. Town of Reading Youth Sport Disciplinary Policy Mr. Connelly stated that he has received feedback from the following organizations: Reading T-ball, Reading Women's Sports, Reading Men's Softball and Reading Youth Baseball. Mr. Lucyniak reviewed his organizations draft disciplinary policy. Mr. Connelly explained that there would only be one Town wide policy and not individual policies for each organization. The Committee recommended inserting the following statement in the Recreation Committee policy, "this policy supercedes any individual organization's disciplinary policy." Mr. Beaulieu motioned to acknowledge Reading Youth Baseball for submitting their draft disciplinary policy to the Committee by September 1, 1999, seconded by Ms. Cavicchi, approved 6-0. Mr. Connelly stated that he would continue to seek feedback from the remaining organizations. Committee member Lorraine Salter entered the meeting at 8:00 PM. OTHER BUSINESS Fall Brochure: The Committee reviewed the new brochure. Symonds Way: The Committee discussed the scheduling and _ development of the Symonds Way field site. Spence Farm: Mr. Connelly reviewed the plans for a soccer field at Spence Farm. K. Davis Letter: Mr. Connelly and the Committee reviewed a complimentary letter from a Reading Recreation parent. Upcoming Events: Mr. Connelly reviewed his need for volunteers for some upcoming Recreation Department events. Basketball and Ski Registration - Clair B., Bernie W., Dave B., Kate K., Jack D. Cross Country Race - Bernie W., Jack D. Mr. Connelly explained that he would need at least 12 volunteers for the 10/16 registration. Recreation Administrators Report Mr. Connelly reviewed the report with the Committee. Joshua Eaton School Playground: Mr. Connelly and the Committee discussed resident comments regarding the new playground. French & Spanish School: Mr. Connelly reviewed the status of the new program. Fall Concert: Mr. Connelly reviewed plans to offer a November concert at the Parker Middle School. Roller Hockey: Mr. Connelly discussed the status of the Roller Hockey Program with the Committee. Reading Aquatics Advisory Board: Mr. Bryant stated that he had not been contacted regarding a meeting schedule. Mr. Connelly passed on the request from the B.O.S. to have the Reading Aquatics Advisory Board submit an annual report. Ms. Salter stated the YMCA Board was meeting next week and hoped to bring up the advisory board issue. Tennis Courts/Tennis Lessons: Mr. Beaulieu discussed his concerns with evening court availability at the Birch Meadow Tennis Courts during the Reading Recreation adult lesson season. The Committee discussed placing signage on the courts that would be used to inform people of court availability. Mr. Connelly and the Committee discussed Courtney Gillman's tennis program. The Committee agreed that Courtney did an excellent job with the instruction portion of the program. Mr. Connelly stated that he would like Courtney to be more accessible to program participants. The Committee discussed suggesting to Courtney the possibility of e-mail or dedicated office hours. Mr. Connelly will discuss these suggestions with Courtney. Ms. Kaminer motioned to adjourn, seconded by Mr. Bryant, and approved 7-0. The Recreation Committee adjourned at 9:00 PM.
