RECREATION COMMITTEE MINUTES
5/9/01 MEETING
In Attendance - Jack Downing, Susan Cavicchi, Lorraine Salter, Chris Campbell, Mary Ellen
Stolecki, Susan Fay, Dave Bryant, Kate Kaminer, Claire Bolger, Mark Hyson, Russell Dean
Jack Downing proceeded over the meeting in Alan Beaulieu's absence. The meeting was started at
7:42 p.m. by Jack Downing.
Everyone read through the April 11, 2001 minutes. There was a brief discussion on the minutes.
Motion was made by Susan Cavicchi to accept the Minutes of April 11, 2001/Seconded by Mary
Ellen Stolecki. The vote passed to accept the minutes 7 - 0.
Mark Hyson stated that the Joshua Eaton PTA was concerned over the people that are parking on
the playground/access road at Joshua Eaton. The PTA will be putting up sawhorses so the people
won't be able to go into that area. It was also brought up that the Cherry Lane Drive Gate needs to
be locked after school. It was suggested that we should maybe have the police ticket cars on the
playground that are not parking legally. Russ Dean said he would check with the Police
Department on this.
Russ Dean gave a report on the update of Fields. He stated that everything was plugged in and
permits are being issued.
Jack Downing brought up a concern about Reading United Soccer. Jack stated that Reading United
Soccer is in a league where they have a rotating schedule with regards to fields. Throughout the
season there may be a limited time when two Non-Reading teams may be playing on a Reading
field. Jack stated that the U-18 level of Reading United Soccer plays on selected weekends in
Reading and then they travel to other areas to play.
Mark Hyson gave a report on the Recreation Software Update. Mark said that he would be getting
new proposals from Rec Trac and Rec Ware. These are two companies that Mark is familiar with
and he would bring his findings to the committee when he received them. The committee asked
Mark to check on the field scheduling module as well, with regards to cost. It was also suggested to
check with the school department to see what they use and maybe they would consider going in
together on the field scheduling component.

A special permit was granted to Pete Moscariello for the use of Morton Field on Sunday, June 10,

condition of a favorable outcome of Legion moving to another field. Sue Cavicchi made the motion
to grant the request and Kate Kaminer second it. The vote passed 7 - 0.
A special permit was granted to Diane McKee from EMWSL to use Collins Field on Sunday,
May 13, from 10 am - 12 Noon for a soccer game. Sue Cavicchi made the motion to grant the

Dave Bryant.asked if we had the final schedule from Over the Hill Soccer League. Mark stated he
would check into it.
Dave Bryant gave a report on the Aquatics Advisory Committee. Dave stated that the Y hired a
firm from Billerica to do a study on the acoustics in the pool area. Noise Control Engineering of
Billerica was the firm. They will hopefully be finished by September.
Dave also stated that the Y is trying to get additional programs for summer, which may include late
evening adult programs in July and August as well as bringing in an Easter Seals Program.
May 15 will be the next Red Cross Lifeguarding class. CPR and First Aid will be included. The
fee is $195 for a member and $225 for a non-member.
Dave continued to say that the Y's feedback form came back and the findings were that the locker
rooms are to small and the patrons were upset that they were not clean. Overall everything is good.
The new vacuum for the pool is working well. They are working on the lap swimmers requests.
Another Feedback survey will be done in the fall.
The Y also went over the contract with the Town, and everything is looking good.
It was brought up that Mark should maybe put in a press release in the paper stating that the Town
of Reading still has a pool and that people can still swim in the summertime.
Jack Downing made a motion to adjourn at 9:52 a.m. Sue Cavicchi seconded the motion.
The vote passed 7 - 0.
