HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-07-11 Recreation Committee MinutesTown of Reading 16 Lowell Street FAX: (781) 942-9071 Reading, MA 01867-2685 a`4ASS 20 RECREATION DIVISI0k: ~'rc~I 9- 421~07~-t- 56 RECREATION COMMITTEE MINUTES 7/11/01 MEETING In Attendance - Alan Beaulieu, Mark Hyson, Bernie Winne, Claire Bolger, Kate Kaminer, and Chris Campbell, The meeting was started at 7:40 p.m. by Alan Beaulieu Dave Bryant arrived at 7:55 p.m. and Mary Ellen Stolecki arrived at 8:05 p.m. Everyone read through the June 13, 2001 minutes. There was a brief discussion on the minutes. Bernie Winne stated that we should write out Friends of Reading Athletics and Reading Municipal Light Department. Mark Hyson stated that he would make the changes. Motion was made by Chris Campbell to accept minutes with above-mentioned changes Seconded by Bernie Winne. The vote passed 6 - 0, to accept the June 13, 2001 minutes with the proposed changes. Charles Hardy from Reading Lacrosse was present and he presented a proposal on Reading Lacrosse. Mr. Hardy has taught Physical Education for 10 years. Mr. Hardy stated he has been trying to get this program going in Reading for 8 - 9 years. Mr. Hardy stated that when he brought this proposal to Phil Vaccaro, Athletic Director for the Reading Memorial High School, Mr. Vaccaro had stated that Mr. Hardy should go through the Recreation Division. This program would be self-funded. Mr. Hardy would like to start at any level. He stated maybe a 9"' and 10`x' Grade level or a 6`I' and 7"' grade ground level program. This would be a boys and girls league. Mr. Hardy would like to start a league in early March. Mr. Hardy has met with Mr. Harry Harutunian, Supt. Of School for Reading and Phil Vaccaro and stated that they are in support of the program but that they are not ready to make it a school sport as of yet. Mr. Hardy stated that he has 65 names on a list of interested participants. Mr. Hardy that the girls just need an open space and the boys would need a football sized field to play on. The Recreation Committee had some concerns on field space and the parameters that would surround their concern. They stated that we have a field crunch already in the spring and lacrosse is a spring sport. They suggested that maybe we start a fall or winter clinic through the Recreation Division. Mark Hyson suggested for Mr. Hardy to call him to set up a meeting for such a fall clinic. The Recreation Committee suggested to Mark Hyson to call Sue Cavicchi, Phil Vaccaro, and Harry Harutunian, with regards to Pop Warner and the conflict on October 281x' with the Road Race and the Halloween Parade. Mark stated he would check with them and the Facilities Department on what has been permitted and what has been going on in the Birch Meadow/High School area on that Sunday in the past. RECREATION COMMITTEE MINUTES (Con't) 7/11/01 MEETING The Recreation Committee portrayed their concern on Mark Hyson's involvement in the Police/Recreation Athletic League. Mark stated that he too had reservations and next year if this program continues a supervisor will be hired to oversee the program. Mark Hyson gave an update on Summer Programs. He stated that all the clinics and the Summer Camp is going well. Mark Hyson asked the Recreation Committee how we should proceed with making up any concerts. They stated that we could make up the first band that was rained-out on August 19th, and if they couldn't make that date, then we would go to the next band that was rained-out and try to book them in on August 19t". Mark also asked the committee how they felt on bringing in new performers next year for the concerts. They stated that it would be a good idea to cycle in a few new performers each year. The contact list of all the Recreation Committee members was gone over and changes will be made to that form. Mark Hyson gave a report on the field usage by Summerfest. Mark stated that there was considerable damage done to the field and that he would check with the Department of Public Works on how we can get the field fixed. Mark also stated he would see that the bill would be forwarded to Summerfest. Mark Hyson had asked the committee to see if they would approve moving the start of the Recreation Committee meetings to 7:00 p.m. from now on, instead of 7:30 p.m. Everyone in attendance said they were ok with the change. Mark stated he would contact the other members and maybe they would start at 7:00 p.m. in September. A special permit motion was put before the Recreation Committee on allowing the RMHS Band to use the field by the old pool on three Sunday's in October from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. for rehearsal Dave Bryant amended the motion to say that RMHS could go until dusk. Alan Bealieu seconded the motion. The vote did not pass. 0 - 6 stating that RMHS Band could not use the field before 12:00 Noon, but they could stay later till dusk if they needed to. Mark Hyson had asked the committee about if the committee knew of contacts for some of the bigger fall programs. They gave Mark some leads as to who to contact. The Recreation Committee asked Mark to call Sani-Can and the Health Division to start to check into how much it would cost to put portable bathrooms at the Birch Meadow site in the Spring and Summer. Mark said he would start checking into this for next year. Bernie Winne made a motion to adjourn at 9:35 p.m. Mary Ellen Stolecki seconded the motion. The vote passed 6 - 0.
