HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-11-14 Recreation Committee MinutesTown of Reading 16 Lowell Street Reading, MA 01867-2685 FAX: (781) 942-9071 RECREATION DIVISION: (781) 942-9075 RECREATION COMMITTEE MINUTES 11/14/01 MEETING In Attendance - Alan Beaulieu, Susan Fay, Mark Hyson, Claire Bolger, Dave Bryant, Mary Ellen Stolecki, Lorraine Salter. Alan Beaulieu started the meeting at 7:09 p.m. Everyone read through the October 10, 2001 minutes. There was a brief discussion on the minutes. Claire Bolger made a motion to accept the October 10, 2001 minutes. Susan Fay seconded the motion. The vote passed 5 - 0, to accept the October 10, 2001 minutes. Catherine Kammer came in to the meeting at 7:25 PM. Jack Downing came in to the meeting at 7:26 PM. Sue Cavicchi came in to the meeting at 8:15 PM Mark Hyson spoke on the preliminary Skateboard Park meeting that was held on Monday, November 5, 2001. Mark stated that in attendance at the Nov. 5 meeting was Peter Hechenbleikner, Alan Beaulieu, Taylor and Kerry Bramhall, Pat Iapicca, and himself. Mark stated that we are in the very infancy stages of this venture. At the conclusion of the meeting the Bramhall's were going to find out more information on the local communities that have skateboard parks. They were going to maybe visit some locations and check out the size and locations that these parks are located with respect to their towns. The Bramhall's were also going to try to get a letter from Mr. Dickinson on an agreement to fund the project. The Bramhall's will be coming in to either the December or January Recreation Committee Meeting to report to the Recreation Committee on their findings. Mark Hyson brought up the issue of the possibility of shrubs being replanted at the Pacino Memorial in Washington Park. The Recreation Committee felt that since there was damage to the bushes that maybe a tree from the Town's Nursery should be planted instead. It was also discussed about the possibility of moving the Memorial rock back to the fence, about 20 feet back. Mark Hyson stated he will speak to Phil Pacino before anything is finalized. Mark Hyson spoke on the Reading Youth Lacrosse Clinics and stated that he had spoken with Charles Hardy and Mr. Hardy stated that the November 11 clinic was very successful. Mr. Hardy stated that over 125 kids attended the clinic. Dave Bryant stated that he attended the clinic on November 11 and that there were about 200 kids present when he was there. The next scheduled clinic will be on November 18, 2001. Mark Hyson stated that if Reading Youth Lacrosse is having this much interest, than it may be a possible problem for field usage in the spring. The committee suggested to Mark to start looking at the preliminary field practice schedule that was used last spring for all the youth sports. The committee stated to maybe look at Sturges Park for practices for Lacrosse for the spring. RECREATION COMMITTEE MINUTES (Con't) 11/14/01 MEETING Mark Hyson stated that Carl McFadden wanted to come before the Recreation Committee on November 14, but he was not going to be able to make it. Mark Hyson stated that he would get in touch with Mr. McFadden and would see what meeting he could make to come to speak to the Recreation Committee on the possibility of merging his travel basketball program with ours. Mark Hyson stated that as of November 19, 2001 Dorothy Ambrefe will be the new principal clerk for Recreation. Mark Hyson and Susan Fay gave a report on the Halloween Parade. They stated that it was very successful with about 200 people in attendance. However, attendance was down from previous years. They stated that everything worked out with traffic, even though it was on a Saturday. Next year we will move the parade back to Sunday. Mark also stated that there was another Halloween Parade on that day at the library. We will try to either combine forces next year or make sure the parades are not on the same day. Mark and Susan thanked the Recreation Committee members that volunteered for the parade. Mark also thanked Susan for doing such a great job in organizing this event. Mark Hyson gave a report on the Rotary Road Race. Mark stated that there was low numbers in the Fun Run, only about 30 kids attended. This was maybe due to the cold weather or maybe that we changed the run from May to October. All in all the entire race was a success. Mark thanked John Winne for volunteering at the race. Mark Hyson stated that the Travel Basketball program is underway and that all the try-outs went smoothly. Mark stated that it looks like we will end up with 3 boy's teams and 8 girl's teams. The Recreation Division, with the help of Kim Penney and Jeff Nelson, will be holding a Basketball coaches clinic on Tuesday, November 20"' at the Coolidge Middle School. This will be for the Travel and Sunday Basketball coaches. Dave Bryant gave an Aquatics Advisory Sub-Committee report. Dave stated that the money for the acoustics study went to the water proofing for the outside of the YMCA. The fixing of the acoustics in the pool, will be on the agenda for the next fiscal year. Dave also stated that the Y is taking requests for out of Reading swim team's, to practice at the Y. North Reading High School and Austin Prep. have put in requests. Dave also brought up that when Swim Team's are not practicing the Y can have more Y sponsored programs and in turn it may mean more money for the Y. Dave also mentioned that this may affect the Benefit Schedule and he stated he would keep the committee apprised of any new issues. Susan Fay gave a Finance Sub-Committee Report. Susan stated that the Sub-Committee would be meeting to come up with a financial forecast for the Division to meet 6 goals. The 6 goals are outlined below. 1. To hire one full-time Program Coordinator for the Recreation Division. 2. To Purchase a Recreation Software Package to aid in program registration, tracking of finances, and field scheduling. 3. To see if the financial forecast can provide us with surplus to possibly give more money to the schools for facility usage. 4. To see if the financial forecast can provide us with surplus to possibly give money to the Public Works Department to aid in field maintenance. 5. To provide site amenities to recreation areas on an as needed basis. 6. The final goal is to create this financial forecast model to accomplish the previous four goals. RECREATION COMMITTEE MINUTES (Con't) 11/14/01 MEETING Sue Cavicchi made a motion that the Recreation Committee meetings in December, January, and February will now start at 7:15 PM. Claire Bolger seconded the motion. The vote passed 7 - 0 Mary Ellen Stolecki made a motion to adjourn at 9:10 PM. Dave Bryant seconded the motion. The vote passed 7 - 0.
