Committee Chairman, David Bryant, Rec. Committee Member, Claire Bolger, Rec. Committee Member, Patrick Fennelly, Rec. Committee Member, Chris Campbell, Rec. Committee Associate Member, Sue Cavicchi, Rec. Committee Member, Kate Kaminer, Rec. Committee Member, Bernie Winne, Rec. Committee Vice Chairman, Mary Ellen Stolecki, Rec. Committee Member, Alan Beaulieu, Rec. Committee Member, Dan McGrath, Recreation Program Coordinator, John Feudo, Recreation Administrator Guests: Jane Jellison Duggan, Jennifer Albanese, John Macaluso, Scott Faris, Mike Sheedy, Dave Sample, John Costigan. Jack Downing called the meeting to order at 7:42 PM and asked the committee to look over the minutes from the May Rec. Committee meeting. A.Beaulieu made a motion to accept the minutes. S. Cavicchi seconded the motion. The motion passed in favor of accepting the minutes of the May 14th Recreation Committee minutes 5-0. J. Feudo introduced Jane Duggan and Jennifer Albanese who have proposed a Special Sunday Permit for August 3rd at 8:OOAM for the purpose of the Annual Jay Jellison Road Race and Fun Run at the Practice Football Field. The Fun Run would begin at 9:00 AM followed by the actual road race. A.Beaulieu made the motion to grant a Special Sunday Permit based on the fact that this was an annual event and there were no abutter issues. B. Winne seconded the motion. Motion passes 6 - 0 in favor of granting the Special Sunday permit for August 3rd at 8:OOAM for the purpose of the Annual Jay Jellison Road Race and Fun Run at the Practice Football Field. Dave Bryant entered the meeting at 7:46 PM. Scott Faris presented the Reading High School Baseball alumni request for a Special Sunday permit for June 22nd at 11:00 AM at Morton Field for the purpose of the Alumni Baseball Game. D. Bryant made the motion to grant the Special Sunday permit to the Reading High Alumni Group. A. Beaulieu seconded the motion. Motion passed in favor of granting the Special Sunday Permit 6 -0. F Scott Faris and John Macaluso from the Full Count baseball program presented their baseball program to the Committee. They stated that the program would be one-on-one training focusing on Town of Reading 16 Lowell Street Reading, MA 01867-2685 r MASS. w P 2 i 1: Reading Recreation Committee June 11th Minutes Continued training players to make the transition from the small diamond to the large diamond. Scott stated that Peter Moscariello endorses the initiative. John Macaluso stated that he felt from he and Scott's experiences and expertise would be good for kids. Their main target would be the 12- 14 year old players. J. Downing asked which season and facility they would need. John M. stated they planned to start as soon as possible and primarily use the Spring and Summer, but would not rule out the Fall season. He went on to state that they planned to stay relatively small so they will only need a small area. The area they seemed to be most interested in using was the Batting Cage at Morton Field, but would take any field recreation would permit them. A. Beaulieu asked about how they would charge. Scott stated they were looking at $35 per %2 hour and $50 per hour with no more than 4 kids per session. J. Downing stated he thought the batting cage was used casually and was concerned about blocking residents from being able to use the cage because of a program. J. Feudo stated that he does not permit out the Batting Cage. Typically when a permit is given for Morton it usually encompasses the cage as well as a general rule. J. Feudo stated he would check with the Town Manager to find out if the was a reason why we couldn't permit the cage out separately. B. Winne felt that there was a need for such a program, but felt that April - June was peak baseball season and he could not see stretching the fields out more than they all ready are. Winne suggested trying July - October. John M. stated the Peter Moscariello had stated that it would be ok to use the cage during games with out a problem. C. Bolger asked if they would accept all paying customers. Scott F. stated they will accept anyone willing to pay. Mary Ellen Stolecki entered the meeting at 8:17 PM . B. Winne made a motion to allow the Full Count Group to move forward to begin in July and August but not before the Recreation Administrator is able to get clarification from the Town Manager on status of permitting the batting cage as well as consulting with Peter Moscariello. The Recreation Director should use his discretion and proceed. C.Bolger seconded the motion. The Recreation Director should use his discretion and proceed. K. Kaminer entered the meeting at 8:29PM. Dan McGrath presented the Wiffleball Tournament scheduled for August 16th and 17th . The committee had a few minor questions about the concessions that would be sold as well as the rain date. Dan stated that the Friends of Reading Recreation would take care of concessions, so the Reading Recreation Committee June 11"' Minutes Continued Recreation staff would concentrate solely on the event. There was no rain date scheduled, although the thought would be to play unless the field unplayable. D.Bryant made a motion to accept the proposal for a Wiffleball Tournament for the weekend of August 16 and 17. C. Bolger seconded the motion. Motion passes in favor of allowing the Wiffleball Tournament 7 - 0. Pat Fennelly entered the meeting at 8:50 PM. Mike Sheedy from Reading United Soccer and John Costigan-and-Dave Sample from Senior Babe Ruth were on hand to try to reach some type of an agreement for the usage of Symonds Way. M. Sheedy explained that RUSC was in need of a 3rd full size soccer field for the U-11 and Symonds Way seemed to be the only option. Mike stated that his league is 100% Reading Resident vs. Baseball Travel teams being from other communities. C. Bolger brought up the point that the soccer teams using Collins are also travel teams and are not only Reading Kids on the teams. D. Sample stated that unfortunately the Lou Tompkin's baseball league is extremely date sensitive and the need to make up any games before Friday each week to qualify for the Trophy weekend. Sample stated he is glad to make any effort necessary to help out soccer with dates that are not using. M. Stolecki stated she felt that this was another situation of a league dictating to an organization when they have to play their games. Similar to the same situation Lou Tompkins baseball is in. A. Beaulieu stated the original intent for Symonds way was for Baseball with Soccer and Pop Warner to use it in Baseball's off-season. A. Beaulieu made a motion to grant Baseball priority to Symonds Way for July 2003 where baseball would pick there dates and make sincere, timely effort to provide the Recreation Administrator and RUSC with any unused dates. B. Winne seconded the motion. Motion passes in favor of the motion 8-0. C.Campbell asked if it was possible that the Rec. Committee could discuss filling in Castine Field at the July Recreation Committee. J. Feudo stated that he would include it on next month's agenda. J. Feudo stated that unfortunately there were four people leaving the Recreation Committee: Sudie Fay, Alan Beaulieu, Sue Cavicchi and Dave Bryant. Feudo thanked them for their time, professionalism and help for the time he had worked with them and wished with well. D. Bryant nominated Bernie Winne as the 2003 - 2004 chairman. P. Fennelly seconded the motion. B. Winne accepted the nomination. Nomination passes for Bernie Winne as the 2003 - 2004 chairman 7 - 0 in favor of Winne's nomination. A.Beaulieu nominated Claire Bolger as the new Vice-Chair. D. Bryant seconded the motion. Nomination passes 7-0 in favor of Claire Bolger as the new Vice-Chair for 2003 -2004. Reading Recreation Committee June 11"' Minutes Continued J. Feudo gave the Administrators Report. Feudo stated the some of the camp week numbers were alarming, especially for the 1st week of Camp and Junior camp but otherwise the numbers weren't too bad. The numbers for the first week actually exceed the first week from 2002. J. Feudo stated with the blessing from Mike McSweeney director of SuperSports, the Reading Recreation Division has opened it's own section of Sports and Games. This is to accommodate the kids on the waiting list for week 1 of Super Sports. D.Bryant gave his final report for the AAC. He stated the Swim Class program sign-ups had 1,200 people and was filling up quickly. The YMCA would also be looking into getting banners and record boards put up for both swim teams. K. Kaminer stated the tennis tournaments went really well. They had tomove the Doubles Tourney inside due to inclement weather. Kate stated the made approximately $2000 from the event. A. Beaulieu made a motion to adjourn the meeting. S. Cavicchi seconded the motion. Motion passed in favor of adjourning the meeting of June 11 th 8-0. Meeting Adjourned at 10:25 PM.
