Committee Chair, Nancy Linn Swain, Rec. Committee Vice- Chair, Jack Downing, Rec. Committee Member, Frank Driscoll, Rec. Committee Member, Steve Meehan, Rec. Committee Member, Rick Shaffer, Rec. Committee Member, Mary Ann Kozlowski, School Rep. Michael DiPietro, Associate Member, John Feudo, Recreation Administrator. Guest : Phil Vaccaro, RMHS Athletic Director P. Fennelly called the meeting to order at 7:35 PM. J. Downing made a motion to accept the minutes from July 14th, 2004. N. Swain seconded the motion. Motion passes in favor of acceptance of the minutes 7-0-0. NEW BUSINESS RMHS Athletic Director At a previous meeting, some questions about a program being run in Reading for strength and conditioning. J. Downing asked J. Feudo to look into the situation. J. Feudo invited RMHS Athletic Director, Phil Vaccaro to introduced himself to the Recreation Committee and to address the situation. Mr. Vaccaro stated he is a friend of Reading Recreation and was not trying to circumvent the Recreation Division program by allowing a strength and conditioning program. He stated that Eric Kaloyinides, who is one of his volunteer coaches, has been running a strength and conditioning program for High School age kids. The program basically takes place in the morning at the H.S. Track and weight room. Allowing the trade off was something that was agreed upon by the former Superintendant of Schools and Athletic Director as compensation for the coaching work Eric provides the RMHS each year. The committee asked Mr. Vaccaro if the program is open to all. He stated that it is and he makes sure he is with in MIAA rules it is required that the program be open to all interested. F. Driscoll asked if this was a one year deal with Eric to do this program. Mr. Vaccaro stated that he anticipated only one year because Eric has plans of starting his own business. Mr. Vaccaro stated that Eric has provided his office with Insurance and Eric has had a criminal background check through the High School. The Committee felt they should have been informed and stated in the future informing them would be advisable. Mr. Vaccaro thanked the Committee for their time and exited the meeting. READING RECREATION COMMITTEE MINUTES CON'T Meeting between BOS and Rec. Committee P. Fennelly stated that he, B. Winne and N. Swain met with Mr. Hechenbleikner, Rick Shubert and Gail Wood of the Board of Selectmen on July 19th. P. Fennelly stated the meeting went very well and was productive. N. Swain stated they spoke about a continuous loop of communication and trying to find a beginning and end point to the process. G. Wood and R. Shubert would take the information back to the Board for discussion. No further information has been available since the meeting. P. Fennelly recommended that the committee table discussion on the Hunt Bathrooms. M. Kozlowski made a motion to table the Hunt Bathroom Public Hearing discussion under old business until the Recreation Committee hears back from the Board of Selectmen. N. Swain seconded the motion. Motion passes in favor of the motion 7-0-0. Old Business Basketball Proposal J. Feudo presented a revised proposal for the up-coming Recreation Basketball season. (See attached). J Feudo stated he is confident that the new program, Recreation Hoops, will service - those looking for a travel program that are unable to play Travel. R. Shaffer made a motion to accept the proposal as presented. S. Meehan seconded the motion. Motion passes in favor of employing the basketball programs for Winter 2004 as stated in the attached proposal. J. Dowin made a motion to amend to the Basketball Program proposal by changing the pricing (1St Child/ 2n Child) of Sunday Basketball to $100/$81 and Travel Basketball $200/$180 and Recreation Hoops $135/$115. Motion passes in favor of changing the pricing (1St Child/ 2nd Child) of Sunday Basketball to $100/$81 and Travel Basketball $200/$180 and Recreation Hoops $135/$115 7-0-0. J. Feudo introduced Steve Meehan to the Committee. Administrator's Report: J. Feudo stated the overall numbers for camp were very good for this year. Summer camp was approximately 91 % full versus just 75 % during 2003. J. Feudo attributed the success to a high return rate of counselors as well as the work Program Coordinator Dan McGrath. The venue was Coolidge Middle School, which made a positive impact as well. Other clinics went very well. Super Sports and Jr. Basketball both sold out completely and Girls Basketball and Baseball were very popular. Tennis numbers were steady all summer and Kids I Crafts needed to have a third session opened to meet the demand of the program. READING RECREATION COMMITTEE MINUTES CON'T Hunt Park playground is ready for installation on August 28 h. The Friends of Hunt Memorial Park are looking for volunteers still to help with the project. Steve Meehan mentioned he is willing to volunteer. J. Feudo stated that the Concert series has come to a close. He thanked Mary Ellen, Nancy and Patrick for volunteering this summer. J. Feudo updated the Recreation Committee on the Skateboard park. J. Feudo stated that the Danis Property ( Frugal Fannies) have included a space for a skateboard park. Their plans are still premature and still need to go before CPDC. Also, a dialogue has been opened with Wakefield to discuss a possibility of doing a joint skateboard park. These talks are also in the early stages. F. Driscoll updated the Committee on the ad hoc Memorial Park Usage Committee. F. Driscoll stated the Committee is preparing to make a report to the Board and the committee is also trying to locate the Heirs of the deed. R. Shaffer made a motion to adjourn the meeting. F. Driscoll seconded the motion. Motion passes in favor of adjournment 7-0-0. Meeting ended at 9:42 PM by: r` ~4
