READING RECREATION COMMITTEE MINUTES
April 12, 2005 at Town Hall Conference Room
Attendance: Mary Ann Kozlowski, School Representive, Rick Shaffer, Rec. Committee Member,
Mary Ellen Stolecki, Rec. Committee Member, Kate Kaminer, Associate Member, Chris Campbell,
Associate Member, Frank Driscoll, Rec. Committee Member, Jack Downing, Rec. Committee
Member, John Feudo, Recreation Administrator.
The meeting was called to order at 7:22 PM.
The Committee was asked to review the minutes from the March 16, 2005 meeting.
M. Stolecki made a motion to accept the minutes from the March 16th Recreation Committee
meeting. F. Driscoll seconded the motion. The motion passes in favor of acceptance of the minutes
5-0-0.
J. Feudo mentioned that the date that seemed to work best for the Recreation Committee retreat for
most members was Saturday, June 11th. He stated he would confirm with the facilitator and would
send a confirming email with location and time once everything was settled.
J. Downing expressed concerns he had with the High School Construction group. His main concern
surrounded the safety of the site.
J. Feudo stated that because the turf field was not completed on schedule, he is in need of some
flexibility with utilizing Sunday mornings. J. Feudo stated that Jack Webster of T-Ball was looking
to receive permission to start early on May 29th and June 5th on the Varsity Football Field. J. Feudo
stated that there were no scheduling issues with May 29th. However, June 5th is graduation at the
High School and timing could present a problem.
A lengthy discussion ensued by the committee.
F. Driscoll made a motion to limit T-Ball to an early permit for May 29th to begin no earlier than
9:00 AM as well as 6:00 PM to Dark on June 5th to allow graduation traffic time to exit.
R. Shaffer seconded the motion. Motion passes in favor of limiting T-Ball to an early permit for
May 29th to begin no earlier than 9:00 AM as well as 6:00 PM to Dark on June 5th to allow
graduation traffic time to exit 5 - 0- 0.
J. Feudo stated he is also dealing with issues at Collins Field on Sundays. Due to the fact that the
r
turf is not yet ready for play and Coolidge being utilized by boys youth lacrosse, there are four
organizations vying for time on Collins Field at Parker. The groups are RUSC, RYLAX (Girls),

EMWSL, Women's Soccer. J. Feudo handed out a spreadsheet with all scheduled games for
Sundays. For the schedule to work, there is a need to use some Sunday mornings beginning at 9:00
AM. J. Feudo mentioned that the schedule is tentative but needed some flexibility to make it work.
R. Shaffer made a motion to give the Recreation Administrator the flexibility to start as early as
9:00 AM on Collins Field for Sunday morning play from April 24th - June 12th 2005. M. Stolecki
seconded the motion. Motion passes in favor of giving the Recreation Administrator the flexibility
to start as early as 9:00 AM on Collins Field for Sunday morning play from April 24th - June 12th
2005 by a vote of 5 - 0 - 0. (see attached schedule)
The Recreation Committee had a spirited discussion about the lights that have been approved to go
on the varsity football stadium.
F. Driscoll asked if it was possible to move the "good" soil from the varsity game field to Coolidge
when the turf is put down. J. Feudo stated that he did not know who owns the soil, but would speak
with Bob Keating and see if it is a possible solution to the poor soil issues at Coolidge.
David Gray from Reading Youth Baseball submitted several requests for early starts for both All-
Star weekend and Playoffs weekend. Mr. Gray was unable to attend the meeting. The committee
decided to discuss the issue despite the fact Mr. Gray was absent. K. Kaminer stated she felt there
needed to be a balance between allowing the athletes to play and respecting the peace and quiet of
the neighborhood at Hunt. She felt 12 hours was too much time to permit a field and it would
burden the neighbors unnecessarily.
F.Driscoll made a motion to accept the requests made by RYB to allow early play beginning at
10:00 AM on both All-Star Weekend (6/12) and Playoffs weekend (6/19 &26). R. Shaffer
seconded the motion. Motion receives a vote of 3 - 2 0 and does not carry.
J. Downing asked to invite Mr. Gray in to the next meeting to get a better understanding of his
request and the needs of RYB.
Administrator's Report
J. Feudo stated he met with the spring season organizations on Monday, April 11. He stated the
meeting was to solve some of the field issues previously mentioned during the meeting. F. Driscoll
asked if a field scheduling sub-committee could be put together to help with the enormous burden
of scheduling the fields. F. Driscoll recommended that we discuss a field sub-committee at the May
meeting.
April 9th was Summer Camp registration day. The Recreation Division did approximately $58,000
worth of business for the day. Camp numbers were comparable to where they were the previous
year.
The Reading Recreation Egg Hunt is scheduled for Friday, April 15th at 3:30 PM. Volunteers are
still needed for the event. Please let Dan or John know if you can make it.
