Committee Chair, Kate Kaminer, Rec. Committee Vice-Chair, Mary Ann Kozlowski, School Committee Rep., Bernie Winne, Recreation Committee Member, Frank Driscoll, Recreation Committee Member, Chris Campbell, Rec. Committee Member, Mary Ellen Stolecki, Rec. Committee Member, Beth Claroni, Associate Member, John Feudo, Recreation Administrator K. Kaminer called the meeting to order at 7:06 PM. K. Kaminer asked the committee to review the minutes from the two previous meeting of July 12th and August 9th. B. Winne made a motion to accept the minutes for both the July 12th and August 9th Recreation Committee meetings as written. M. Kozlowski seconded the motion. Motion passed in favor of acceptance of the minutes for both the July 12th and August 9th Recreation Committee meetings by a vote of 6-0-0. J. Downing entered the meeting at 7:16 PM. Imagination Station Update J. Feudo reported to the Recreation Committee that an audit of Imagination Station was requested by the Board of Selectmen. The audit has been set up for Saturday, November 4th at 9:00 AM with Leather Associates (the company that assisted the with the build). J. Feudo stated he felt that it would be appropriate to have representation from the BOS, Recreation Committee and the Health Department. B. Winne stated that the Recreation Committee had already made a decision on Imagination Station and it was to demolish and rebuild. He felt the committee had already made its recommendation and if the Board of Selectmen felt an audit was necessary, perhaps they should be on hand. J. Downing stated he would speak with the Recreation Committee/ BOS liaison James Bonazoli about the situation and recommend having them have a representative there. J.Feudo also mentioned that Health Administrator, Jane Fiore will be on hand for the audit. Turf Field #3 J. Feudo stated he has begun looking at possible locations for the next synthetic turf field. J. Feudo showed a map of the layout for Coolidge Middle School. The Recreation Committee seemed to READING RECREATION COMMITTEE MINUTES CON'T October 11, 2006 Conference Room -Town Hall think Coolidge was the best location due to the condition of the current field. J. Feudo stated he is working on the budget and scope of work as part of the process of having the $200,000 from the state released. The $200,000 from the state is a matching grant. There will be a special town meeting sometime in February to request the rest of the money for the project. The exact source of funding has yet to be determined. Administrators Report J. Feudo gave an update regarding Fall programming numbers. Several playgrounds are currently being finished up. The Tot Lot on Bancroft Ave is 90% complete. We are waiting on delivers of some swings and it will be complete. The highlight of that playground is the rubberized mulch that has been put down. The funding for it was privately raised by a neighborhood fundraising group. The cost was approximately $10,000 for the rubber mulch. The total project ended up costing in the area of $35K. The Wood End playground is set for installation October 21St. They are still looking for volunteers to help out. This will be a community build assisted by Gametime. The Friends of Reading Recreation have completed two more programs. They ran a very successful 5 K race through the town forest in which over 100 people showed up. They also held the 1St annual Ball Hockey Tournament. 60 Kids participated in that program as well. J. Feudo mentioned he was looking for some assistance for registration day on Oct 28th. B. Winne, M Kozlowski, F. Driscoll and K. Kaminer all said they could help. J. Feudo said he would follow Finally, Travel Basketball tryouts begin the week of the 15th of October. This will mark the beginning of the first season in which the program will fall completely under the Recreation Division. Sub-committee reports K. Kaminer gave an update regarding the Friends of Reading Tennis Task Force. The goal of the task force was to replace the existing courts on Bancroft Ave. Tennis was one of the few activities at the HS that did not benefit from the enhancements from the renovation project. K. Kaminer discussed the membership of the task force and mentioned that it included a Selectmen and a School committee member. The group is hopeful to use three separate sources to raise the funding for the courts (grants, private donations and town allocation). K. Kaminer stated as some point, the task force would be back before the Recreation Committee looking for support. F. Driscoll reported on the Northern Area Greenway Ad hoc committee. He stated that the committee had only met once and appointed Dave Williams as its Chairman. The group had a f= - number of site walks scheduled through many of the passive recreation spaces in town. The group has been charged with developing a master plan utilizing some of the natural recreational facilities in Reading. He will keep us posted as they proceeded.
