February 26, 1997
The Finance Committee met in the Superintendent's Meeting Room at 7:30 p.m. Present were
Chairman Steve Blewitt, Vice Chairman Jim Keigley, FinCom members Nate White, Carol
Grimm, Rocco Nenarella, Richard McDonald, Gerry MacDonald, Catherine Martin and Secretary
Maureen Vierra. School Department members were as follows: Harry Harutunian, Dennis
Richards, Susan Cavicchi, Tim Twoomey, Tom Stohlman, Robin D'Antonia and Matt Cummings.
Also present were Beth Klepeis, Richard Foley, Russ Graham, Camile Anthony, Michelle Carrick,
Mike Zapantis, Steve Crook, Sandy Michand, Ellen Commito, Mark Johnson and Bob Hilliard.
Superintendent Harry Harutunian reviewed the status of the current year's budget. Special
Education is running a deficit of $164,858.00 which they have been able to cover approximately
50% of by using funds from other accounts. An additional need of $8,423.00 for a student who
wishes to attend Minuteman High School will leave them with a shortfall of approximately
$89,689.00. They have not determined where they will seek the additional funds.
Russ Graham was present to discuss Warrant articles 11, 12, 13 which are for school
improvements. Article 11 is for improvements at Joshua Eaton and is in the amount of
$350,000.00, Article 12 is for improvements at Birch Meadow in the amount of $600,000.00 and
Article 13 is for improvements at the High School in the amount of $1,850,000.00.
FinCom reviewed the capital plan and received an update on the Technology plan (how and where
money has been spent YTD).
The Finance Committee had requested information regarding how the budget amount requested
was derived on the following subjects: Time and Learning, Special Needs, Building maintenance
and Curriculum Initiatives. The School Department provided detailed explanations and handouts
to each of these questions.
On a motion by Gerry MacDonald seconded by Richard McDonald the Finance Committee voted
to transfer $3,075.00 to the unemployment account by a vote of 7/0/0.
The Finance Committee went into Executive session with the School Committee at 10:30 p.m.
On a motion by Gerry MacDonald seconded by Catherine Martin the Finance Committee voted to
adjourn at 11:00 p.m.
