Finance Committee Meeting
March 1, 1993
The meeting convened at 7:30 p.m. in the Conference Room, at
16 Lowell Street, Reading, Ma.
The following members were present: Chairman Richard Coco,
Fred Van Magness, Bill Murphy, Bill Albro, Gerry MacDonald,
Liz Greene, Jim Keigley, and Steve Blewitt. Also in attendance
were Town Manager Peter I. Hechenbleikner, Fire Chief Don Wood,
Conservation Chairman Jim Biller, CPDC Chairman Jonathan Barnes,
and Director of Community Development Jonathan Edwards.
The Chairman distributed Minutes from the February 17, and 24,
1993 meetings.
On motion by Richard Coco seconded by Jim Keigley the Minutes
from the February 9, 1993 meeting were approved by a vote of
6-0-0.
The Finance Committee reviewed the Community Development budget.
The issues discussed were supply costs and who the supplier
is; Inspection hours need to increase for publ'd.c service and
emergency needs.
Jim Biller, Chairman of the Conservation Commission expressed
his concern for the department's need for clerical support.
The Finance Committee made no changes to the Community Development
budget.
The Finance Committee reviewed the Emergency Management and
Fire Department budget. There were discussions pertaining to
an overtime request for training, which in fact may be about
$10,000 short.
There was discussion as to why the Fire Department does not
charge for false alarms, the conclusion is it would probably
cost the town in the end.
There was a lengthy discussion regarding firefighters uniforms:
could the budgeted yearly amount be accrued if not used in its
entirety, (yes it can). Also discussed, was the use of a breathing
apparatus machine, the cost to operate and its purposes.
Lastly, was the need for monies budgeted pertaining to restoration
of Engine 1 and possible purchase of a new bucket truck.
The Finance Committee made no changes to the Fire Department/
Emergency Management budget.
The Finance Committee adjorned at 9:30 p.m.
