HomeMy WebLinkAbout1983-10-11 Board of Selectmen Minutes Meeting Notes 10/11/83 Members Present: J. Russell, M. O'Brien, P. Dustin, M. Rosenthal and P. Landers. The meeting opened with Mr. Rosenthal reading a Proclamation for the Reading Business & Professional Women's Club. The Board then voted to sign the Proclamation. Barbara Mellin, Chairperson for the Reading Arts Council introduced Jean Silva of 33 Marla Lane as a candidate for the Arts Council to be interviewed by the Board. After the interview the Board voted to appoint Mrs. Silva to the Arts Council for a two year term ending June 30, 1985. The Board approved the application for a One Day All Alcoholic Beverage License for Austin Prep for November 19, 1983. The Board read a letter from Richard Brown, Postmaster, Reading, in which he requested the Town to provide parking spaces on a temporary basis for 30 Woburn letter carriers. After a brief discussion the Board asked the Executive Secretary to get more information regarding the request. The Board then read a letter from the Town Accountant concerning crossing guards that have been charged to the unemployment benefit budget. The Board requested Mr. Agnew to check with Town Counsel concerning the Town's legal options to reduce this type of charge in the future. The Board read a notice from the Mass. Dept. of Personnel Administration stating that the Town's request for a Police Department promotional exam for Police Lieutenant was being acted on. Upon the receipt of letters from the Town Clerk concerning various damage cases filed by citizens,the Board asked the Executive Secretary to obtain a status report of these cases. The Board approved the September invoice from Allan Drachman in the amount of $563.14. The Board then met with representatives from Burger King Restaurants to act on their application for a Common Victuallers license. The representative discussed with the Selectmen their plans for re-opening the old "Sambo's" building. After the discussion the Board voted to approve the license. The Board met briefly with the Board of Assessors. The Assessor's reminded the Selectmen that the Selectmen must advertise and hold a public hearing on the procedures the Town will use in its percentage ratio of assessment for every classes of property. The Board asked the Executive Secretary to prepare and place a legal advertisement for the hearing to be held on Monday, October 31st with a cancellation date of November 7th. The Board then requested the Executive Secretary to arrange for a meeting with the Board of Health and Treasurer for their next meeting. The Board asked that a letter be sent to the School Department reminding them that the Selectmen had requested a Police Officer be present at all school dances. 10/21/83
