HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-05-30 Board of Selectmen Minutes Board of Selectmen Meeting May 30, 2000 The meeting convened at 8:00 p.m. in the Selectmen's Meeting Room, 16 Lowell Street, Reading, Massachusetts. Present were Chairman Sally Hoyt, Vice Chairman Matthew Nestor, Secretary George Hines, Selectmen Camille Anthony and Matthew Cummings, Town Manager Peter Hechenbleikner. On motion by Hines seconded by Anthony, the Board of Selectmen voted to go into Executive Session for the purpose of strategy with respect to litigation — 23 George Street, to come back into Open Session at approximately 8:30 p.m. On a roll call vote, all five members voted in the affirmative and the motion was carried. The Board reconvened in Open Session at 9:00 p.m. Discussion/Action Items 23 George Street Litigation - On motion by Hines seconded by Cummings, the Board of Selectmen moved to engage legal counsel to appeal the Zoning Board of Appeals' decision at 23 George Street. The motion was approved by a vote of 4-1-0, with Hoyt opposed. Vice Chairman Matthew Nestor explained to those in attendance that the Town intends to hire its own counsel and that they would be willing to work with counsel from the abutters on this appeal. Chairman Sally Hoyt noted that she always supported the neighborhood issue of safety and density but feels that the neighbors can be adequately represented by their own counsel. Selectman George Hines noted for the record that the Board's motivation in making this appeal is that the neighborhood will be significantly impacted. The Board's appeal is based on the understanding that the neighbors will go forward with their appeal, and the Board of Selectmen was assured that the neighbors would. Vice Chairman Matthew Nestor noted that the Board of Selectmen may be knocked out procedurally and even if that is the case, the neighbors need to go forward. The neighbors agreed. On motion by Hines seconded by Cummings the Board voted to adjourn their meeting of May 30, 2000 at 9:10 p.m. by a vote of 5-0-0. Respectfully submitted, Secreta
