RE: School Redistricting
TOWN MANAGER
(781) 942-9043
The School Committee has approved elementary school redistricting effective next Fall. The
Town staff and School staff have reviewed the impact of that re-districting on the demand for
Town services. These services may include Crossing Guards, sidewalk construction, school
zones and operating issues particularly at the new Wood End Elementary School.
The Board of Selectmen will be meeting on Tuesday, March 22„ d at 7:30 p.m. in the Selectmen's
Meeting Room, 16 Lowell Street to share our plans to address these issues. You are welcome to
attend that meeting, hear our plans, and share your comments.

Subject: Re: FW: Meeting re re-districting
Gail,
The purpose of the meeting is to provide a forum for the community to
hear
the town's plan to address new safety issues resulting from the
redistricting. This includes crossing guards, crosswalks, sidewalks and.
other items that fall under the town's control.
I had attended most of the redistricting meetings that the school
committee
conducted in November and December. I heard many residents express
safety
related concerns about the new routes their children will travel to
school.
It's up to the selectmen to answer some of their concerns.
In January, town and school staff worked together to create a set of
recommendations to address these issues. The next step is to share the
plan
with the community. The school committee has been reluctant, for various
reasons, to accept previous invitations to join us in presenting the
plan.
They are certainly invited, and I hope they attend, but one way or
another,
I think it's important to provide the forum for the community. Knowing
the
solutions have budget impacts, this will probably come up at town
meeting -
another reason to get the plan out to the community and start the
discussion.
Sharing the night of Mar 21 would likely cut short the amount of time
each
agenda item would require.

were Superintendent of Schools Pat Schettini, Police Safety Officer Tom Murphy, Town Planner
Chris Reilly, Town Engineer Joe Delaney, Highway Supervisor Mike deBrigard, Town Manager

The redistricting plan was reviewed in detail. The following are the priority actions
recommended, based on the redistricting plan as presented:
L. Add Crossing Guards at the following approximate locations:
Bancroft Avenue at Lowell Street;
Main Street at Franklin Street;
Franklin Street at Sunset Rock Lane and
Potentially one other location on Franklin Street
2. Add crosswalks at the following locations:
Pearl Street at Franklin Street;
Potentially Franklin Street at Blueberry Lane/Sunset Rock Lane
3. Change school zone signs to flashing school zone signs on Franklin Street.
4. Potential parking regulations:
One side of Melbourne south of Summer Avenue no parking, standing or stopping
at restricted school hours.
Franklin Street no parking, standing, or stopping in the area of Sunset Rock Lane.
5. Sidewalks - priority sidewalk construction locations as follows:
Franklin Street from Main to Dividence Road
Franklin Street from Sunset Rock Lane to Susan Drive
Pearl Street from Eastway to Franklin Street
6. Additional actions may be required in terms of construction and/or regulation as a result
of the Wood.End School Working Group which I am in the. process of establishing.
We are currently getting estimates .on the cost 'of sidewalks as noted above, crosswalk
installations, and the flashing school zone sign. We will include as much of this as possible in
the FY2006 capital budget and/or as part of budget amendments to the FY2005 budget.
