June I5, 2004
The meeting convened at 7:30 p.m. at the RCTV Studio, 224 Ash Street, Reading,
Massachusetts. Present were Chairman George Hines, Vice Chairman Richard Schubert
Secretary Gail Wood, Selectmen Camille Anthony and Joe Duffy, Town Manager Peter
Hechenbleikner and reporters from the Chronicle and the Advocate.
The Selectmen's Forum started at 7:30 p.m. Topics covered included the landfill development,
Downtown improvements, financial planning,-construction activity in the community, elections
for the coming year, traffic issues, drainage issues, hours of construction, Downtown parking,
affordable housing and street signs.
The Fonm-i closed at 9:00 p.m. The Selectmen's meeting continued.
Approval of Public Works Contract Wood moved and Anthony seconded a motion to
authorize the Town Manager to sign a labor contract between the Town of Reading and the
ANSCME DPW Union effective July 1. 2004 through June 30, 2007. The Town Manager
outlined the major aspects which included a 2.75% salary increase per year for three years,
elimination of sick leave buyback for employees hired after July 1, 2004 and reduction of
floating holidays for employees hired after July 1, 2004. The Town Manager noted that the Town
and the Union enjoy an excellent working relationship, and this is very much a credit to the
employees and to the Board of Selectmen for establishing a climate for that relationship.'
Members of the Board expressed their appreciation to the DPW Union. The motion was
approved by a vote of 5-0-0. 1
On motion by Anthony seconded by Wood, the Board of Selectmen adjourned their
meeting of June 15,2004 at 9:10 p.m. by a vote of 5-0-0.
