Dear Select Board Members
The Council on Aging would like to thank the members of the Select Board for the approval of ARPA funds to
support the funding for a feasibility study for a new Senior Center and/or Community Center as well as
funding for the support of additional Senior Center programs due to the hardships the over 60 community
faced during the pandemic and the well documented increased need for programs and services due to the
growing population and lack of space in the existing building.
As you know, The Reading Center for Active Living Committee has been charged with exploring possible
locations and programming needs for anew Senior Center and/or Community Center. The committee has
already visited centers in neighboring towns to conduct a preliminary assessment and held 3 Public Forums.
The Committee will hold 3 Public Focus groups to seek resident feedback and the results of a town -wide
survey are expected to be available in December, 2022. This survey will provide more information on the
needs of the community. Finally, the feasibility study should be completed by March 2023, at which point the
town will begin to look at possible locations including Symonds Way.
A need has already been established for a new Senior and/or Community Center. The senior community has
been waiting for a very long time to see this work be completed. The town should work cooperatively to
meet the needs of all citizens without hampering the results of RECALC.
The Council on Aging strongly urges the Select Board to prioritize the RECALC timelines in relation to planning
for a Symonds Way Exploratory Committee. Specifically, the RECALC feasibility study must be completed and
findings included in any SWEC recommendations.
Additionally, we support the representation on the Symonds Way Exploratory Committee as follows:
• At least 1 RECALC member AND
• At least 1 Council on Aging Member or Senior Advocate (ex -officio, appointed by the Council on
Aging)
Sincerely,
Marilyn Shapleigh
