Sarah confirmed that each member had submitted the necessary paperwork with regards to Open Meeting Law and Conflict of Interest. Tonia McGuire volunteered to be co-chair of School Council for the 2020-2021 year; Bryn Panee Burkhart volunteered to serve as secretary. These roles were supported by the rest of the members. Minutes from the last School Council meeting in January 2020 were approved. Sarah reviewed the four areas of focus of School Council: reviewing and making recommendations for the School Improvement Plan; reviewing the School Budget; weighing in the Parent Handbook (which will have updates and revisions due to impact of COVID on school/learning), and picking up the WASH allergy guidelines. Sarah shared that she and two other Killam teachers would be attending a professional development series on Leading and Teaching with Equity. She was excited to have the opportunity to do this and take the content back to Killam. We then reviewed the draft of the Killam School Improvement Plan for 2020 - 2021, which has two strategic objectives: (A) having a coherent instructional system for hybrid learning; and (B) developing practices that support diversity, equity and inclusion in our school. Members weighed in with ideas for strengthening the school plan. Christine Strack and Bryn Burkhart emphasized areas where parents could help in areas, such as helping families participating in remote learning feel more isolated (strategic objective A) and possibly having a parent lead a book club focused on diversity, equity and inclusion. Kim Adamo mentioned an RPS teacher, Karen Hall, who is doing workshops on D, E & I in other school districts. We thought about ways the PTO might be able to support these efforts as well. Page 1 1 Sarah is integrating comments into a new iteration of the plan and the committee will give her feedback shortly. Meeting was adjourned at 4 p.m. Next meeting will take place January 11, 2021. Page 1 2
