Topics of Discussion:
1. Review and vote on minutes from the March 11,2020,meeting.
a. Eileen Manning moved to approve the March 11, 2020,minutes and
Sherilla Lestrade second the motion.
2. Remote learning
a. Experiences and Lessons from first 6 weeks
-staff connected with all students
-weekly staff meetings(a time for collaboration and support)
-built a sense of community amongst the teachers i.e. feel more
comfortable to share with each other
-teachers connecting 1:1 With students and as classes
-student engagement: a lot of time has been spent by staff trying to keep
students engaged
What about students that are not engaged: teachers are personally
reaching out all different times of the day/evening if that works
b. Current process and expectations
-the students were reporting that students were asking for more
Consistency because they were having hard time navigating the technology
-Curriculum takes more than one day to build
-more engagement for P grade
-meeting platform is challenging to use too-cannot see the entire class
Page 1 1
c. Share thoughts/experiences
-small group projects so small groups of students could work together and see
each other
-seems like the same assignments each week, vary choice board
-more opportunities for social interaction(small group projects)
- students enjoying the prerecorded videos of teachers i.e. 81h grade math
- some conflicts with videoconferencing meetings/classes for students
(two meetings/classes scheduled at the same time on same team)
- students supporting each other logging on to TEAMS
-weekly vs daily schedule? Both are working for families
- deadlines for assignments more advance notice than same day
-provide advance notice of live sessions (not same day)
3. End of year
a. Retrieving student belongings
Tentatively week of June 1"
Drive up/curbside pick up of materials
Teachers allowed to enter buildings last week of May to clean out/up classrooms
b. Transitions/celebrations/Goodbyes
Some thoughts: drive through parade
8i° grade: awards/ceremony virtual
Group video viewings
Students not interested about virtual field day
Showcase for a cause: students want that even if it is a prerecorded and students watch viewing
together
8s'graders: maybe clapping them into the HS on their first day
If they could be spaced out enough-Mrs. Shankland could give out yearbooks and certificates
Virtual Party from their own houses
S" grade transitions—could a student/f onily create a virtual `tour"of the school?
5'^graders have filled out a survey"submitting questions"and 6a'graders are answering
questions. A final video will be made and sent to all 5'a graders.
c. Share thoughts and suggestions
In the fall-"A Go Back Day"
Scavenger hunt around Reading
4. Planning for next school year
a. What will school look like?
Still being discussed: planning for 3 different scenarios: back in building,
virtual or hybrid
Hybrid: when students are home, do they dial in?
Right now we we not allow to video anything with student faces and/or
voices.
Announcement coming out soon on the state level
A committee will be formed to help with the decision making
b. School Improvement Plan
Limited Discussion on the SIP—a new one will be written for next year a
possible meeting in June for input from School Council
5. Other
Page 1 2
5%budget cuts for each building
Placement for the fall/leveling classes:this conversation is happening now
Discussion around Power Standards provided by the state
Is there a possibility of getting grade level resources for summer enrichment? i.e. using Kahn
Academy use XXXX chapters for entering 71' graders, XXX chapters for entering 8'° graders
Possibly point out other ways that students can learn i.e cooking.
School Council members are truly appreciative of Mrs. Shankland hosting a virtual school
council meeting and for the teacher's time attending
