HomeMy WebLinkAbout1979-06-11 Board of Public Works Minutes June 11 , 1979 Meeting of the Board of Public Works convened in Room 131 , Reading Memorial High School at 7: 15 P. M. Present were Chairman Price, Board Members DeHart, Testa and Wood and Superintendent Louanis. Mr. DeHart informed the Board it was necessary for him to attend a meeting with the School Building Committee and retired from the meeting. It was moved, seconded and voted to table action on the min- utes of the previous meeting. It was moved, seconded and voted to table action on material bids. Mr. Cowell joined the meeting at 7: 25 P. M. The Superintendent, at the request of the Chairman reported on the status of the Cedar Glen Housing Project on North Main St. , stating he had received word from Cedar Glen, Mr. Tom Southworth, that funding was eminent and that plans to move ahead further on the project were made. Mr. Southworth requested a meeting with the Superintendent and the meeting was held with the following in- dividuals in attendance: the Superintendent, Assistant Superinten- dent Bergeron, Mr. Tom Southworth, Mr. Carlson and Mr. Haley, en- gineer for Cedar Glen. At that meeting a discussion of the sewer system took place in which Mr. Carlson indicated his desire to cooperate with Cedar Glen in constructing the sewer from the pumping station in Collins Avenue across the swamp to Cedar Glen to sewer the housing project. The Superintendent indicated that it was his understanding that the Board of Public Works had pre- viously agreed to assist with the sewer project by providing the engineering services for assisting with the design of the sewer and file with the Conservation Commission. After considerable discussion of the Engineering Division' s involvement in this project and the Board' s concern of enhancing economic opportunity and private de- velopment it was moved, seconded and voted the Engineering Division stop all work on the project except for contacting the Conserva- tion Commission to find out if they are willing to act favorably upon the alternate sewermain extension from Collins Avenue and to notify the parties involved of the Town' s proposed participation. The Board signed the Plan and Release of Restrictions on lots on Criterion Street Extension (Developer - Donald Johnston) . The Board reviewed the bids for the computer, Contract No. 79-9. Questions were asked by the Board and answered by Mr. Ber- geron concerning the contract and the type of system he recommended. Of the five companies bidding, namely Wang, Digital Business System, Quantel , Four Phase System and I. B. M. , Wang was the low bidder. Mr. Testa moved, Mr. Cowell seconded and it was voted that Contract 79-9 be awarded to Wang Laboratories in accordance with Schedule A, Alternate III in the amount of $15,799.40 subject to their pro- viding the required bond. The Board signed the following: Payroll for period ending June 8, 1979 Bill Roll dated June 15, 1979 and Commitment Sheet in the amount of $554.40 for sewer house connections ( laterals) .
