HomeMy WebLinkAbout1977-06-06 Board of Public Works Minutes June 6, 1977 ' Meeting of the Board of Public Works opened in Room 16, Municipal Building at 7:30 P. M. Present were Chairman Dustin, Secretary Price, Board Mem- bers Blood and Botka. Minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as written. Read letter from Donald E. Sweet, Chairman of Tennyson Club Committee requesting permission to block off and occupy Tennyson Road from 1 :00 P. M. to 11 :00 P. M. on Saturday, June 18 (rain date June 25) for the purpose of holding their annual cookout. It was moved, seconded and voted to grant permission subject to the following conditions: no alcoholic beverages be served in the public way, liability insurance be obtained and the area be swept and clean following the event. Read letter from the State Department of Public Works con- cerning intersections of South Street, Hopkins Street and Summer Avenue at Main Street. It was accepted as a point of information. Meeting adjourned temporarily in order that the Board could meet as the Board of Survey and reconvened at 7 :40 P . M. Read letter from Tyler and Reynolds and Craig relative to the Borden-Remington Corporation bid for ferric chloride and caustic soda. Mr. Price moved that the Board reject all bids for caustic soda and ferric chloride in the best interest of the Town. There was no second and Mr. Price withdrew his motion. Following a lengthy discussion, Mr. Blood moved and it was seconded that the Board award the contract for ferric chloride and caustic soda to Borden-Remington Corporation in accordance with their bid of March 31 , 1977• It was voted 3-1 . It was moved, seconded and voted to award the contracts for chemicals to the low bidders as follows: Sodium Hypochlorite 12%. . .Crystal Chemical and Pkg. Co. Inc. M. regard- ing the Petition of the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company and the Town of Reading Municipal Light Department to place one pole on the Northerly side of Hopkins Street approximately 105' East- erly of existing pole 44/14 and to remove one pole approximately 145, Easterly of pole 44/14 on the Northerly side of Hopkins Street. Mr . Blood abstained from the discussion. Mr. George Cooley repre- sented the New England Telephone Company and answered questions from the Board. It was moved, seconded and voted to grant per- mission to the utility companies to install and remove the poles as outlined in the Order. Mr . Blood abstained. It was moved, seconded and voted to award the Contract to the low bidder, New England Chain Link Fence Company in the amount of $4,635• Read Notice of Public Hearing at 8: 15 P. M. regarding tak- ing an easement through private property located off Arnold Avenue for sewerage purposes. No one attended the Hearing. The Superin- tendent reported to the Board that due to survey error in the lo- cation of the Reading-Woburn Town-City Line it became necessary to take an additional easement in Reading for the interceptor sewer to Woburn. The Department had negotiated with the owners of the property to grant the easement subject to the Board , abating the sewer frontage assessment on the property abutting the end of Arnold Avenue and that the owners had signed the Minutes - continued June 6, 1977 ' necessary Waiver of Claim from Damages. It was moved, seconded and voted to close the Hearing. It was moved, seconded and voted to take the easement. The Superintendent signed the Plan and the Board signed the Order of Taking.
