HomeMy WebLinkAbout1962-08-27 Board of Public Works Minutes :11 August 27, 1962 am Meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7:30 P.M. in Room 16, Municipal Building. Present were Secretary Watt, Board Members Brown, Florence and Kenney, and Superintendent Welch. L t�r�ernes Mr. Hodson being absent, Mr. Watt acted as Sacaetary. Minutes of the previous meeting read and approved. The Board Members discussed the sewer contract and pro- gress being made by the contractor, Frank Reego and Sons, Inc. Read letter addressed to Board of Selectmen from William H. Clancy, 77 Franklin Street, Boston, representing Herbert F. and Marilyn Roome, 18 Willard Road, Reading, to re- cover for damage to their property as the result of blasting by our agents in the construction of the sewer during the year 1961. Mr. Florence moved the matter be referred to Town Counsel, Mr. Kenney seconded and it was voted. Read letter from State Department of Public Works, Chapter 90 Construction, advising that the sum of $18,600.00 had been assigned to the Town of Reading for the improvement of Salem Street, Route 129, and John Street, on condition that at least $9,300.00 shall be contributed by the Town and $9,300.00 by the County and that the cost to be borne by the Commonwealth shall not exceed the amount assigned. Mr. Florence moved, Mr. Brown seconded and it was voted to accept the data as information to the Board. Mr. Kenney moved, Mr. Brown seconded and it was voted r to approve and sign petition of W. E. Koulouris, 132 Summer Avenue to construct a Cement Concrete sidewalk in front of his property subject to the rules and regulations of the Board of Public Works. Chairman read note from the Superintendent advising that the following amounts are in the House Connections account: - Salaries $3,368.88 Expenses 275.18 Mr. Welch reported the installation of 102 connections to date this year compared with 74 in 1961. It was his opinion that 30 more connections could be made if additional funds were obtained. Mr. Florence moved the Superintendent 's suggestion be followed and the Board request the Finance Committee to approve a transfer from the Reserve Fund in the amount of $6,000.00 to be divided as follows: Salaries $2,500.00 Expenses 00.00 6,000.00 Mr. Kenney seconded and the motion carried. Chairman read note from the Superintendent suggesting that applications for Bituminous Concrete sidewalks be accepted from three owners on Arlington Street and work accomplished. The lots are successive. Mr. Welch outlined motion previously passed by the Board permitting installation of sidewalks. The Board was informed that all blocks of sidewalks for which petitions have been received have been either installed or hearings were held and opposition voiced in other instances. Hearing will be held in , early September for a sidewalk on part of Charles Street. 93 Mr. Watt moved, it was seconded and voted that the r previous motion be amended to include installation of two or more contiguous sidewalks upon receipt of applications if funds are available. Mr. Brown moved the applications for the three side- walks on Arlington Street be accepted and the work accomplished; Mr. Kenney seconded and it was voted. Read note from Mr. Welch regarding applications for sloped curbing at #11 and #15 Kingston Street. Mr. Kenney moved the applications be accepted and the work performed; Mr. Brown seconded and it was voted. Read list of bids taken August 23, 1962 for Bituminous Concrete recover work as follows: - Per Ton Essex Bituminous Concrete Company �. 7 Trimount Bituminous Concrete Company 5.69 , Barrett Company 6.65 Mr. Brown moved the Bituminous Concrete contract be awarded to the low bidder, Essex Bituminous Concrete Company; Mr. Kenney seconded and it was voted. Read note from Mr. Welch regarding bid of $4,095.00 for a Flexible Seweroder by J. F. McDermott Company of Roslindale. Mr. Florence moved, Mr. Kenney seconded and it was voted that J. F. McDermott Company be awarded the order for one Flexible Seweroder at a net price of $4,095.00. Signed payroll and billroll for the period August 19 through August 25, 1962. A discussion ensued on the use of television (Penetryn) "' versus camera for the inspection of the sewers. 94 Mr. Watt discussed at some length the use of different chemicals which might be employed at the new Water Treatment Plant for the purification of the water.
