May 14, 1962
Regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened
at 7:30 P.M. in Room 16, Municipal Building.
Present were Chairman Hodson, Secretary Watt, Board
Members Brown, Florence and Kennel, and Superintendent Welch.
Minutes of the previous meeting read and approved.
Read letter from Board of Selectmen inquiring if the
Board of Public Works has any further use -of the property off
John Street and a brief description of what the water and
storage facilities might be for the area at the present time.
Mr. Hodson read the Superintendent's comments thereto which
resolved the problems into four headings -
1. Theoretical approach
2. Future utilities
3. Present utilities
4. Engineering studies
Mr. Florence moved that the information contained in the note
dated May 14 from the Superintendent be incorporated in a reply
to the Selectmen; also that the Board feels that it should not
at this time attempt to give specific answers to questions rela-
tive to utilities either as to location or capacity but should
wait until studies are completed. It was seconded and the motion
carried.
Mr. Arnold Berger, an interested party, questioned the
Board about a reply to a letter received from the Board of Se-
lectmen.
Conference was held in regard to the New Filtration
Plant with Messrs. McGlame and Mullaney of James Construction
Company, and George Bogrenof Weston & Sampson. Also attending
64
the meeting were Brendon Davis, James Putnam and John Louanis,
Mr. Bogren, at the meeting held on May 7, agreed to
go over the items to be done with the contractor and report to
the Board on same.
Each item was discussed in detail and decisions made.
At the May 7 meeting, it was the opinion of the Board and Mr.
Bogren that the 18"x 12" Wye installed in place of an 18"x 18"
Wye should be removed. Mr. Bogren asserted that after further
study of the plans, he had approved the 18"x 12" Wye and had so
notified James Construction Company. A discussion followed.
As Mr. Bogren approved installation of the 18"x 12" Wye, no
further action was taken.
Read letters from Hosmer R. Kimball and Guerton Elec-
tric Company regarding replacement of 24 Conductor #14 cable
damaged in three places. It was the opinion of Guerton Electric
Company that if damaged only in the manhole, the cable could be
spliced. It was the opinion of Roemer R. Kimball that a new
cable should be installed.
Mr. Florence felt that Mr. McGlame should concur with
Mr. Bogren and Mr. Kimball. Mr. Bogren was to pursue this matter
further with Guerton Electric Company,
A detailed discussion ensued on the definition of leaks
and dampness and the use of water stops or waterproofing,
Mr. McGlame was questioned about completion of the north
half of the Filter Plant, May 29 was set as the date, not May 23,
as designated by Mr. Bogren, Cut-over would take seven working '
days, followed by sterilization. Mr. Welch is to inform Mr,Bogren,
65
who in turn will notify the contractor when the plant may be
taken over.
When questioned about the Estimate which had been re-
ceived showing 5% work remaining to be done, Mr. McGlame stated
that 5% or $25,000 should be quite sufficient to cover the cost
of the work remaining to be done.
The Board adjourned temporarily at 10:55 P.M. to most
as the Board of Survey.
The Board reconvened at 11:05 P.M.
Read note from the Superintendent in relation to "go
carts" using the driveway to the garage and the Town Counsel' s
opinion on same.

to prohibit the use of the driveway by "go carts".

Edward Blaine, Jr. of Stoneham as a replacement for Mr. MacBrien
as Chief of Survey party. Mr. Welch recommended that Mr. Blaine
be hired at a minimum salary of $94.20 per week as of May 21,
1962. Mr. Florence moved the Superintendent's recommendation be
followed, Mr. Kenney seconded and it was voted.
