May 31, 1961
Regular meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at
' 7:30 P.M. in Room 14, Municipal Building.
Present were Chairman Florence, Board Members Leonard,
Hodson and Watt and Superintendent Welch.
Minutes of the previous meeting read and approved as
amended.
Chairman Florence announced that due to the resignation
of Willard C. Ames, Secretary of the Board, nominations would be
accepted for a Secretary. Mr. Watt nominated Mr. Leonard, Mr.
Hodson seconded and it was voted.
Read note from the Superintendent with reference to abuse
which caretakers are receiving from people using the dump after clos-
ing hours; also, Mr. Welch had requested that a police cruiser go by
the dump entrance each night between 7:00 and 8:00 P.M. to assist
' . the caretakers. Mr. Welch informed the Board that two special police-
men had been retained to attend the gate on alternate nights. It was
also suggested that the caretakers make note of the registration num-
bers, date and time.
Mr. Watt moved that the Board accept the Superintendent ' s
recommendation as written. Mr. Leonard seconded and it was voted.
Read data from the Superintendent regarding reorganiza-
tion of the meter room and the change in billing dates of certain
accounts. This was accepted as information only.
Mr. Florence read comparison and information from the
Superintendent regarding salaries in the Department. Mr. Leonard
moved that Item #4 on the Agenda be accepted as a report of progress.
Mr. Watt seconded and it was voted.
Read Mr. Welch' s comments with reference to a Clerk of the
Works for the new Treatment Plant. Mr. Leonard moved that Mr.Brandon

Davis be invited to confer with the Board regarding the position.
Mr. Watt seconded and it was voted.
Read letter from the Board of Selectmen in regard to Lot
171 on "A" Street as shown on Assessors' Plat 99. Mr. Leonard
moved the Board of Selectmen be advised that in response to their
letter of May 23, 1961, the Board of Public Works foresees no in-
terest in said lot. Mr. Watt seconded and the motion carried.
Read note from the Superintendent confirming plans to
visit the Kittery, Maine filter plant on June 1, 1961 and the Bill-
erica plant on June 8, 1961.
It was recommended by the Members that the Sanitary Sewer
contractor, Norina Mirra, confer with the Board at the next meeting
in regard to the progress being made on the 1961 sewer program.
The Board discussed the Summer schedule of meetings and
it was moved to hold a meeting on June 5, 12 and 26, 1961. The
Board will hold no scheduled meetings during July and August ex- -
cept on call of the Chairman. The Fall schedule will start Septem-
ber 11, 1961. Mr. Watt seconded and it was voted.
Read letters from the Town of Stoneham, Board of Public
Works regarding study on incineration and request for a meeting
with the Reading Board at a mutually convenient time. Mr. Leonard
moved that Mr. Welch make arrangements to meet in Stoneham on June
19, 1961. Mr. Watt seconded and the motion carried.
Signed the pay-roll and bill-roll for the period May 28
through June 3, 1961.
Meeting adjourned at 8:35 P.M.
