May 25, 1961
Special Meeting of the Board took place at 7:30 P.M.
in Room 14, Municipal Building.
Chairman Florence, Board Members Hodson, Leonard and
Watt and Superintendent Welch were present .
Chairman Florence announced that he had been notified
that a letter of resignation from Board Member Willard Ames had
been filed with the Town Clerk on May 24, 1961.
It was moved, seconded and voted that, since the
resignation was filed as irrevocable, it be accepted.
The Board discussed the classification and salary
schedules of the Department at some length.
Mr. Hodson moved that a four-point program as out-
lined below be undertaken in preparation for a reclassification
of the Department and a readjustment of salary limits for the
Department. The program is: -
1. Prepare a tentative schedule of proposed classifica-
tions and salaries.
2. Request a conference with the Personnel Board to dis-
cuss and review tentative schedules.
3. Attempt to develop schedules which will meet the re-
quirements of all Boards except Municipal Light and School
Committee.
4. Arrange to present program to Precinct Meetings.
Mr. Watt seconded the motion and it was voted.

A discussion took place about the various types of
rapid sand filters in some local filter plants and those pro-
posed for the new Reading plant.
Mr. Leonard moved that the Board visit the Billerica,
Massachusetts filter plant and the Kittery, Maine filter plant.
Mr. Watt seconded the motion and it was voted.
Superintendent Welch will try to arrange for a visit
to Billerica at 7:00 P.M. on June 8, 1961 and at Kittery, Maine
at 2:30 P. M. on June 1, 1961.
Meeting adjourned at 9:00 P.M.
